Today is the first day of the New Brunswick forest fire season for 2021. With the opening of the season and the nicer weather approaching, this is a reminder to homeowners who would like to have camp fire in their yard that there are municipal bylaws that govern recreational fires (camp fires). You can find more information by clicking on the link below: http://www.kvfire.ca/faq.html

Is there an emergency? Don't call us - call 911! We sometimes get calls directly to the stations for an emergency - such as a fire, electrical problem, an odour, or a fire alarm sounding for an unknown reason. If you call the station directly, you may be asked to hang up and call 911 anyway. When you call 911, your phone number and address are displayed automatically so even if the call is interrupted they still know where you are. We do not have that ability in our fire stations. As well, our dispatch centre, the Public Safety Communications Centre in Saint John, are able to dispatch the appropriate apparatus based on your location and the type of call.

What are the most important things to know about smoke alarms? There should be a smoke alarm on every level of your home and preferably in every bedroom Smoke alarms have an expiry date... Smoke alarms should be tested monthly Make sure to change batteries as recommended by the manufacturer's instructions (or at least once a year)

As we start into the colder weather, homeowners need to be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide as it relates to heating sources in their home. One resident experienced the dangers of carbon monoxide in late December: This was a scary life lesson but one I want others to know about. We had an issue with our propane stove that caused a buildup of carbon monoxide in our home. Luckily, we had already installed carbon monoxide alarms in our home that alerted us to the issue... before the levels could climb too high. The firefighters told us to always call if the alarm goes off and the dangers of carbon monoxide. Not only that, but they also checked our home for other fire safety issues as well. -Keith, Quispamsis Please watch this short video about carbon monoxide. https://youtu.be/27aFLXhYw6Y

Research shows that approximately 30 years ago you had 10 to 15 minutes to escape a house fire. Today, you have about 3 to 5 minutes to escape - this is because houses are built from different materials, modern homes have more petroleum and plastic based products, and house designs, including open concept and higher ceilings all increase the speed at which a fire spreads. Have an escape plan, sleep with bedroom doors closed, and make sure you have the right amount and properly functioning smoke alarms.

As the province has moved back into the orange phase, please review the following changes to our fire department's operations during this phase: -No outside visitors except for essential services (maintenance, repair, etc.). -Car seat installations will be limited to installs for newborn infants or expectant parents only. -Any member of the public purchasing a civic sign will be required to wait outside while the sign is prepared.... -Home inspections are suspended. -Site visits are suspended (tours, public events, etc.). As we have been since the start of the pandemic, you will notice our firefighters taking a number of precautions on emergency calls, such as masks and gowns. We had already implemented social distancing protocols so while we work with the community, we will continue to maintain a social distance of two meters whenever possible.

With wind gusts hitting 80 kilometers per hour and temperatures around -12C, firefighters battled two structure fires yesterday. The first fire off of Grove Avenue in Rothesay was reported by a passerby around 3:30 pm; once firefighters arrived on scene the house was fully involved in fire and was totally destroyed. The family of two was not home at the time. One firefighter sustained a minor injury from a slip and fall but otherwise no one was hurt. The cause remains und...er investigation. A second fire on the Gondola Point Road in Quispamsis was reported at approximately 8:45 pm; a fire in the roof grew quickly beyond control because of the high wind conditions. The family was able to escape without injury and the home has significant fire and water damage and is also being investigated. We would like to thank the many agencies who assisted us yesterday: Kennebecasis Regional Police Force Ambulance New Brunswick paramedics, Rothesay Town of Quispamsis water and works departments, NB Power crews, and Hampton Fire Rescue, Simonds Fire Department, Saint John Fire Department, and Nauwigewauk Fire Department for mutual aid assistance. To give a perspective on the conditions, pictured is firefighter Mike O'Brien.

Santa Claus is coming to Quispamsis for one night only this week. Although the traditional Kennebecasis Valley Santa Claus Parade will not be held, due to COV...ID-19, the Town of Quispamsis has devised a plan to see the Jolly Old Elf in person. A drive-thru Selfie with Santa will be available this Wednesday (Nov. 18) from 6-8 pm in the Arts and Culture Park. Santa will be near the cul-de-sac on Landing Court, where vehicles can stop for a quick wave and photo. Traffic flow will be one-way only: Vehicles must enter at Landing Court and exit from the KV Bowling Lanes/Valley Sands driveway. Members of the Kennebecasis Regional Police Force will be on site to assist with traffic control. To ensure everyone’s safety, people must remain in their vehicle at all times, and pedestrians will not be permitted in the park during the event. Drivers are expected to proceed with caution. Mrs. Claus and I know this has been a difficult year, Santa Claus said. I hope to see you on Wednesday, but please stay in your car, and I want to remind the adults to drive carefully. Ho ho ho! The traditional tree-lighting ceremony at the Arts and Culture Park will not take place. The Holiday Dreamland display will be lit up later. See more

Following a short ceremony this morning, our new Tank 2 officially went into service at Station 2 in Quispamsis. As part of the ceremony, Chief Bill Ireland spoke about the new truck and Chaplain Bruce Smith gave a blessing. This was followed by a "wet-down ceremony" where the old truck sprays down the new one and it is finally pushed into the station by the firefighters. Tank 2 is single axle tanker built on a Freightliner M2 112 chassis with a Dependable tanker body. The apparatus features a Hale AP50, 500 GPM pump with five (5) discharges and a 1800 USG poly tank.
