Langley Aero 11.01.2022

Well the end of a long aviation maintenance career is very close. Tomorrow is my last official day with Langley Aero. Ryan and Anthony have purchased the company from me and will continue to do well I’m sure. The reason we have worked so well together for so long is our shared attitude towards doing it right. As our customers and suppliers know, they have been running the operations for some time already and have done very well. Nothing will change. Our biggest challenge ha...s always been to keep up with the demand. I will be around to offer direction and occasional assistance if needed, but they won’t need much. Maybe I’ll get to pick up or deliver a few aircraft for them and the occasional test flight after rebuild. I’ve always enjoyed that. To my staff, Ryan, Anthony, Eric and Jeff, who have been with me for so long, and many other more recent and past employees, thank you for your hard work, attention to detail and safety, and honesty. Without your hard work and dedication, I wouldn’t be able to enjoy life moving forward as I am. To my suppliers, whom I have dealt as Langley Aero and many of you much further back in the past, it has been a pleasure working with you. To my long list of customers, many who have become good friends, thank you so much and I’m sure you will enjoy continuing to work with Ryan and Anthony as you did with me. I fact, maybe you would rather work with them than the grumpy old man! Thank you all once again. Starting up Langley Aero and running it the past 15 years has been one of the most challenging but rewarding years of my life. I will miss the daily frantic pace, actually no I won’t. I’m happy taking an hour to drink my morning tea, then working in the yard, or my workshop, going fishing, flying, quading or sledding, depending on the season, and enjoying our home in the Cariboo with Wendy. Once again, thank you all. See more

So, yesterday was just another day at the office for Langley Aero. At 9 am I departed YNJ in the worlds greatest airplane , climbed up to 8000’ and headed direct Bridge River Glacier. Along the way enjoyed the scenery of the coast range. Overflew the moraine lake with all of its bergs, then landed at my usual spot, 900’ of loose gravel at 4600’ elevation. Flight time 50 minutes. Walked the 1.5kms to the scene of the poor disabled Bearhawk and rigged it for helicopter lift. S...hortly after along came Mark from Mustang Helicopters and his A-Star B3. The lift went well and he flew it 25nm to the Gun Lake strip where it was lowered onto the waiting trailer. After walking back to the 180 I flew in to remove the wings and tie it down on the trailer, then took off for Home. Arrived at YNJ at 5 pm. Typical 9-5 day? I wish! Not a cloud in the sky for hundreds of miles in all directions and smooth as silk air. See more

Had an interesting flight today off the snow. I weed runway at Langley, to Tacoma Narrows to deal with a flat tire on a customers King Air. Canada customs couldn't handle less than 2 hours notice for the return so I wasted an hour. Landing YXX for customs was a challenge. Landed 07 with winds 02 @ 24G31 in blowing snow. Fun stuff! After customs took off across the runway again for The snow at Langley. All in a days work at Langley Aero.

Today Rick and Jeff drove in Ricks truck from our home base in Langley all the way to Wells Nevada, east of Reno, on the way to St George Utah to salvage a damaged Cessna 180 for rebuild. Should be at the airplane around lunch tomorrow. Almost hit a bull elk in the dark at 70 mph that thought standing in the middle of the highway was a good idea.

Completed the final of 3 planned 185 cross country ferry trips this week. First was straight floats from Quebec, second was on wheels from Orrilia Ontario, and this weeks was from Barrie Ontario, all three were to Langley. We left Barrie just before noon on Monday and landed Langley around 7 PM Tuesday. 1800 nautical miles in two days. Weather was less of a factor this trip than the first two but still forced a few minor deviations from a direct route.

Just got back from bringing the second 185 from back east. This one was on wheels. Short day Monday from Orillia Ontario to Elliot Lake for one of the most challenging landings in some time due to extreme wind conditions. Next day to Swift Current Saskatchewan. Yesterday was breakfast in Swift Current, and lunch back home at Langley. Weather slowed us down a bit but not much.

Our last stop on the way home from Quebec on Tuesday. Fuelling up with Jerry cans in Nelson. It was a challenging trip and took several days longer than expected. Multiple weather issues, and trouble finding fuel at water bases were the biggest problems, but we finally made it! You can see our track here. www.tinyurl.com/rickchurch
