My latest thoughts in light of the recent tragic events. I started thinking about the way in which Non-native officers are introduced into First Nation communities. You are not just serving and protecting a community, you are serving and protecting a culture. ... Our communities may look similar to yours, but it has a history all of its own. Every First Nation across the country each has its own story. And if you are going to police it, you must understand it, respect it, and become a part of it. Until each FN community has it’s own Police Department, fully staffed by native officers, we need to take action now and here is a possible approach: New policies and practices: New officers who are non-native must participate in certain activities that introduce them to the community and culture during their probationary period: Sessions, cultural events, training, community engagements, traditional teachings/activities, team building, etc. These sessions should be built by our community members such as elders, youth, community leaders, CNC, hunters, fishers, loggers, air, water and land protectors. These sessions must answer questions such as: What are the realities this community faces? What are their teachings, their culture, their history?, etc. Participants need time to process the emerging issues we and other First Nations are facing and how to reconcile and respond accordingly. There is no one size fits all approach. Participation (in these probationary activities) also allows the community (and the department) to identify if these officers are here for a pay-check, using the community as a stepping stone to further their resume by working on Reserve or are really here for the right reasons. This type of approach allows these officers to learn about the history, the land, what makes us who we are. And finding out about them, what makes them who they are. And after this probationary period is finished and they have successfully completed the training and teachings, including meeting the departments operational/administrative criteria, we can have a welcoming ceremony for them. Now both sides are fully accountable to each other. Listuguj has lead on many fronts and can lead again on this issue. Listuguj and our police department takes pride in who we are and how we have a safe community for our children to grow up in. Let’s create, adopt and share best practices to protect our people without waiting for Canada to finally recognize that our lives matter just as much as theirs.
