THURSDAY UPDATE: Yesterday our coaches took some great photos out on the water while our sailors practiced tacking and gybing on the whistle! Today we had a blast sailing in the rain! ... Some of our activities over the past two days were morning stretches, upwind sailing, practicing knots, and a land lesson on how a 29er sailboat works!
Our first Able Sail Athlete of the season. A proud moment for the yacht club!
TUESDAY UPDATE: Lots and lots of sailing at kids camp!!! We learned about safety, taking care of our equipment, how to treat hypothermia/heatstroke, tow trips, ticklers to adjust our sails, and so much more! Can't wait for tomorrow!
Day two done and dusted! Our staff and volunteers are all greatly benefiting from a new LF to Newfoundland, bringing in fresh new ideas and expanding our knowledge pool! Remember, if your child doesn't fit into our two camp categories, contact us directly @ [email protected] and we'll come up with a Covid safe bubble solution catered for you and your family/friends. Hi everyone! Just a friendly reminder, now that we are about to begin the new season we have been working hard to make our sailing school building at the level it needs to be following best practices - especially considering the new Covid-19 guidelines. From now own, please note that:... Only persons who need to enter the facility for sailing school or race team activities can do so for the duration of the season. The Sailing School staff will be disinfecting the facilities at the beginning, middle, and end of every day, as outlined by the government guidelines. This means when the race team comes on site, they must finish with a disinfection of all boats, equipment and spaces used - Especially the bathrooms and common surfaces touched (contact Sky Walker, head coach for more details). We will both be shut down if we do not maintain this. Ensure all equipment and personal gear has been emptied from the main floor prior to disinfecting. Remember that campers arrive in the morning and there will not be time to disinfect then, so please help us continue to provide a safe and professional program by adhering diligently to the disinfection protocol. The school does not have the ability to run a lost and found that is safe for Covid-19. Any gear found the following morning will be garbage bagged, labelled for date, and left behind the building outside. Only the Sailing School Staff is allowed to enter any areas marked STAFF ONLY. Our staff has made the sacrifice of being a group bubble in order to reduce which areas need daily disinfection. This means there will be a one strike policy for this. If there is anything stored in the staff only sections, please let us know in advance and we will organize storage outside of the staff only areas. In every way practical, please use common sense and help reduce the number of persons contacting surfaces, equipment etc. Consider designating two people only to enter the workshop area to get gear and sails. Please let us know if there are additional guidelines you feel would help us in our effort. We are all a team, and by helping each other and keeping our lines of communications open we can have a safe, and fun season! Thank you for your ongoing commitment and co-operation as we continue to work together to provide a safe and healthy summer out on the water!!! Sky Walker Head Coach, RNYC Sailing School
Day 5 - End of week summary! Thank you for your patience and understanding this past week, as it has been a very difficult summer for us all. We are extremely lucky to have been approved for any sailing program here in NL, so we must remain stringent to the new government regulations. This in addition to the weather has made it quite difficult for us to get your children out on the water. Please note that we have done the best we could to provide maximum sailing knowledge and... other sailing related games/activities throughout the week. We would like to provide you with a short summary of how our week went: What to work on: All of our instructors are trained by Sail Canada and assessed each of your sailors with checklists throughout the week. They received an end of week evaluation and feedback on what to work on when they return to sailing camp. To progress, we would like to get more time on the water and hope for better sailing weather! What went well: We learned a lot about sailing on land! For example, the importance of physical fitness, nutrition/hydration, knots, safety, rigging, boat/yard maintenance, and several different theory related games and lessons. Have a great weekend!
Day one of instructor clinic done and dusted... We are grateful to Chairs Tully our LF for being a rockstar! We're booked solid next week but after that there are limited spaces available. Kids camps from 10+, bubble specials for everyone else! Click here to register: https://rnycsailingschool.checklick.com/
Day 4 was slightly less rainy but slightly more windy! Although it was not safe for our sailors to get out on the water today, we were still able to learn lots about how to sail upwind and boat/yard maintenance!
What a rainy & windy day 3!! All 6 campers participated in indoor games related to sailing in the morning (knot tying, rules of the road, and much more). In the afternoon, our remaining 2 campers learned how to stay warm and prevent hypothermia in cold weather while going on an outdoor hike around our facility, followed by a game of indoor soccer to get that cooped up energy out! Looking forward to what adventures tomorrow has in store!
Thanks to suitable weather conditions on day 2, all 6 campers were able to get out on the water!

Hello NL sailors!! The moment you have all been waiting for!!!! The RNYC Sailing School is pleased to be offering several programs this summer. Due to the novelty of the program and covid-19 guidelines, we will be having a soft-open (shorter programs with less participants) throughout July. Please be patient, as we are trying to be as safe as possible to ensure you and your children have a much-deserved summer out on the water! Details to come this week.. Stay tuned... ...A little bit about myself My name is Sky Walker and I am going to be this year's Head Sailing Coach! I am 3 days away from the end of my isolation period here in NL. I fell in love with sailing at the age of 7. I can now proudly say I have a decade coaching and program development experience for Sail Canada programs (including able sail). I am also involved with the adapted sailing community where I met Matt Debicki. I have my BSc in Kinesiology and hope to pursue my masters in Occupational Therapy back in Halifax after the summer! Fun sailing photo: last summer I had the incredible opportunity to be the social media representative as well as participate in the Fireball World Championship regatta in Montreal, QC. I can’t wait to see what new memories I will create this year in NL!

We are currently developing a robust plan for this summer season. Please note we will be following government guidelines as well as the advice of our sporting bodies in order to ensure we provide a safe and fun learning environment at the sailing school. At present, we are not taking enrollment and ask that you check back to this page regularly for the most up to date information. Sincerely, Matt Debicki Sailing School Manager

In April 2019, SailNL President Ryan Kelly presented a new strategic vision for the organization and outlined a new approach to grow organized sailing and recreational boating Newfoundland and Labrador. We discussed the structure of the organization, cruising, racing, training and some initiatives like a newly developed RECSail program. Check out our video series as we talk about the future of SailNL, and how we’re going to work directly with our members to grow the sport w...e love. Don't have time to listen to a ton of videos? First learn to sail course of the year done and dusted!
We are very excited to be hosting Dee and Kevin at the end of the month to help train our instructors and volunteers who will be running our programming this su...mmer. Here's a video of Kevin out sailing!" Don't forget to come to our stakeholder meeting May 27th at the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club!
Some wise words before the beginning of a great season: A community of sailors is a group with a variety of qualifiers. Some have physical skill, agility and e...ndurance. Some have experience, in some cases broadly based on lakes and seas. Some have knowledge of sailing theory, navigation and related scientific information concerning weather and water. Some have the required knowledge of the responsibilities incumbent upon a captain. Some have common sense and appropriate caution and respect for the sea. Some have a good sense of self and how well she or he is equipped to handle all of the above. Some have all of these qualities; most of us don’t. Some have great boats, well fitted for the voyage; some don’t. And these are all things that are of great interest to those of us who love to sail and sometimes go out to sea.
Come to the meeting and then stick around after to help get the Sailing School ready for the season.... Moving boats out of the storage sheds, rigging them up to see what parts are needed.. organizing the school basement etc... Free hot chocolate and coffee for all... Bonus Karma too!
Young Ken came aboard Monday to be our first student't of the year. Despite his youthful exubérance, we are already confident he will make a lifetime sailor!
