Spotlight on : Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Pertussis, whooping cough, is a serious and highly contagious infection of the lungs and throat caused by Bordetella pertussis bacteria. Young children who have not been immunized get sicker than older children and adults. Pertussis starts like a common cold with symptoms such as: Sneezing, Runny nose, Mild fever, and a mild cough.... Pertussis containing vaccines are part of the routine childhood immunization program (starting at 2 months of age with the final dose given in Grade 8). Spotlight on Diabetes and Foot Care: Dr Hussein, our in-house Endocrinologist is an expert in Diabetes Management. Did you know that an important part of managing diabetes is proper foot care? People who have diabetes are more likely to have problems with poor blood flow (circulation) or loss of feeling (sensation) in their feet. Poor circulation to the foot may lead to sores that are slower to heal. Loss of feeling or sensation is caused by damage to the nerves in the lower... legs and feet. This nerve damage occurs as a result of blood sugar levels that have been high over a long period of time. As a result of loss of feeling or sensation, a person with diabetes may not be aware of temperature, pressure or pain.
