Tonight begins Tisha B’av, the saddest day In the Jewish calendar, as we commemorate the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem and the displacement of Jews. The day of mourning includes a 25-hour fast that begins tonight (8:43) through tomorrow night (9:15) It is a day to reflect on the sinat chinam baseless hatred that lead to the destruction of Jerusalem. To recognize that there is no place for hate in our hearts and in our societies, but rather we shou...ld fill our hearts with hope, as the Jews have done for generations. Hope rebuilds the ruins of Jerusalem. The Jewish people kept hope alive and hope kept the Jewish people alive. What can be lost can be regained. And what can be ruined, can be rebuilt. -Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. These lessons are more important this year, with the current health pandemic, than perhaps ever before. To all fasting we wish you an easy and meaningful fast. And to all, we wish this a time for you to take a step back, consider how we can rebuild society through hope, be’ahavat chinam loving without judgement.
