How do our brains process speech? The average 20-year-old knows between 27,000 and 52,000 different words. Spoken out loud, most of these words last less than a second. With every word, the brain has a quick decision to make: which of those thousands of options matches the signal? And about 98% of the time, the brain chooses the correct word. How is this possible?... Gareth Gaskell digs into the complexities of speech comprehension. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZP7pb_t4oA

5 Types of #Localization Project Managers via Nimdzi Project Managers (PMs) are a key cog in the whole localization machine. They not only manage clients projects but also have a sales and account management role, nurturing and growing the business relationship a company has with its clients through their exemplary work.... Translator and Interpreter Pay: CIOL Finds Significant Degree of Dissatisfaction via Slator https://slator.com//translator-and-interpreter-pay-ciol-f/... CIOL Insights Careers and Qualifications, questioned 320 language industry practitioners about how, when, and why they had entered the language industry. The survey participants were mainly translators and interpreters (ca. 70%), as well as teachers, students, retirees, and others such as project managers, business development and sales professionals, and administrative job holders. According to the CIOL, the survey results indicate that work is needed in two main areas. Firstly, to ensure that linguists are equipped with the right business and technology skills. Secondly, to raise awareness and understanding of the value of the services provided by professional linguists. The full CIOL report is available to download here: https://www.ciol.org.uk/ciol-insights-careers-qualification. #xl8 #L10n #GoingGlobal

What Keeps Buyers of #Localization Awake at Night Nimdzi asked over 100 buyers of localization services who work for any number of companies from small to large organizations what kept them awake at night. While an average of 31.1 percent of respondents reported that *quality* is the number one concern keeping them up at night, *cost* concerns reside on the opposite end of the spectrum with an average of only 4.9 percent.... The majority of buyers believe that cutting corners to save a few pennies might end up costing them much more in the long run a gamble they arent willing to take. #xl8 #L10n #L10nBuyers https://www.nimdzi.com/we-know-what-you-did-last-summer-bu/

How ASICS Runs #Localization: Insights on Vendors, Processes, Technologies According to Alessandra Binazzi, Director of Localization: She chooses language service providers (LSPs) that can support a wide array of services, not limited to translation. Examples of the services they use are localized visual asset production, third-party reviews, transcreation and local copy writing, and local content creation.... We enforce continuous localization in an agile environment and encourage our regional partners to use our central TMS. We use a human-only translation model for creative content as well as product UI. For large-scale content, we use a model that combines MT with human translation. Despite continuous developments of MT technology, quality remains the main drawback of MT. How challenging is it to localize runner lingo? Binazzi said, as with any passionate community, runners use a unique terminology and engaging linguists who are runners and fitness aficionados is a requirement in our sourcing. Always interesting to see how a company handles #L10n.

Dont blame the mirror for your ugly face: why foreign idioms rule by Hannah Jane Parkinson, for The Guardian Italy, as you might expect, has many food-based idioms. To have ones eyes lined with ham is to be blind to something obvious. In France, to pedal in the sauerkraut means to go nowhere fast, or have difficulty finishing something.... English: A bad workman always blames his tools. In Russian? The much more brutal: Dont blame a mirror for your ugly face. In response to a sneeze, the English is: God bless you. Mongolian goes the extra mile, with: God bless you and may your moustache grow like brushwood. Other idioms are so bizarre that they appeal for their sheer imaginative energy. Prevaricating in Latvian is to blow ducklings. Which makes no sense, and seems unfair on ducks somehow. In Croatian, what goes around comes around becomes: The cat comes to the tiny door. #languages #idioms

A Place for Everything by Judith Flanders The curious history of alphabetical order We take it for granted, yet it plays a key role in our daily lives the ABC and how it conquered the world The Library of Alexandria, founded around 300BC, only used first-letter alphabetical order.... Writing has been invented at least three times in different parts of the world. The alphabet was invented only once. The slow rise of alphabetical order relied on many technologies coming together: the codex book (scrolls are fine for continuous reading, but rubbish for looking things up), pagination (rare in the earliest books) and the explosion of words that came with the arrival of paper and the printing press. Ultimately, Flanders suggests, the unstoppable democratisation of knowledge demanded alphabetical order.
