Live Well! Massage Therapy 03.04.2021

UPDATE: Covid test was NEGATIVE.

Live Well! Massage Therapy 15.03.2021

AND I'm isolating again. Same as back in July. Potentially exposed last Thursday. I only just found out. My schedule is closed for the next little bit while I isolate and seek getting Covid tested to be cleared.... I am asymptomatic and it has almost been 7 days so far. I am only posting this to let people know why there are no days showing to book until mid April (according to AHS, I don't have to alert anyone unless I test positive). Techinically my last potential day is April 8th as long as I remain clear and have a negative test. Leanne

I have no doubt that if I had been able to say that we succeeded in fighting to make massage therapy exempt and that services were able to resume, that I'd be trying to cram everyone in before the end of the year. Because of the stipulation that a doctor's prescription or written referral from a regulated health professional is required now... it's like crickets. We might as well still be shut down. In a way we are. ... If you are typically a client of massage therapy... how do you feel about this. Would love to know your thoughts.

Live Well! Massage Therapy 27.12.2020

Considering a job opportunity in Halifax. I could be leaving in the near future for an uncertain amount of time... in this moment, the intention is temporary - since massage therapy is hurting right now in Calgary and hardly anyone is seeing enough clients to survive, including myself - but I am considering making the move permanent, so this would be a way of 'trying it on' to see where I want to be for the long term. Going to take the next couple weeks to prepare things in c...ase I hop a plane soon... so if you need a massage before I go, I highly recommend booking in since I'm not sure how long I'll be gone. I will certainly keep in touch and make sure you're updated as far as my plans. The prescription/referral is still required right now, but I just received an email from my association that we are fighting to remove this restriction. Will keep you posted. ~ Leanne

Would you like to get started with massage therapy but, have concerns about coming in? Are not able to obtain a prescription or written referral yet? A virtual care consultation is completely possible, to get your in depth health history completed, some assessment, formulate a treatment plan and start working with strategies to manage your pain and discomfort. Reach out to book your consultation, or for more information.... ~ Leanne

UPDATE: MASSAGE THERAPY RESUMES UNDER THE PARAMETER OF WRITTEN PRESCRIPTIONS FROM A MEDICAL DOCTOR, OR WRITTEN REFERRAL FROM A REGULATED HEALTH PROFESSIONAL. SEE DETAILS BELOW. "As per the update provided by the Chief Medical Officer of Health, massage therapists are able to resume immediately providing services under the following guidelines: All clients must have either a written prescription from a Medical Doctor, or a written referral from a regulated health professional ...(https://www.alberta.ca/regulated-health-professions.aspx) An existing written prescription is only valid if issued within the last 12 months. An existing written referral is only valid if issued within the last 12 months. A copy of the original written prescription or written referral is acceptable. The written prescription or written referral must be provided prior to receiving treatment. A copy of the written prescription or written referral must be kept in the client’s file. All previous requirements for hygiene standards, PPE, masks, and other barriers issued by the individual associations will still apply until January 4, 2021. We will release the new Infection Prevention Control Manual for Massage Therapists in Alberta document before the end of 2020, which will come into effect January 4, 2021. This exemption, which has been provided by the Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) may be terminated or modified by the CMOH in writing without notice and for any reason as determined by the CMOH." Merry Christmas everyone! The best Christmas gift is that we fought and succeeded, to have massage therapy made exempt from the shut down - massage therapy services have resumed. Going forward a prescription from your doctor or referral from another regulated health professional, is required for your file to book and receive services. ... If they try to charge for it, ask them how it is any different than needing it for your health insurance reimbursement and do they charge in that circumstance. Regulated health professions: Acupuncturists Audiologists Chiropractors Combined Laboratory and X-ray Technologists Dental Assistants Dental Hygienists Dental Technologists Dentists Denturists Dietitians Hearing Aid Practitioners Licensed Practical Nurses Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists Medical Laboratory Technologists Midwives Naturopaths Occupational Therapists Opticians Optometrists Paramedics Pharmacists Pharmacy Technicians Physiotherapists Physicians, Surgeons and Osteopaths Podiatrists Psychiatric Nurses Psychologists Registered Nurses Respiratory Therapists Social Workers Speech-Language Pathologists

The appointment to acquire this referral from the regulated professional can be done either in person or via virtual meeting. I've been hearing about people safely being able to utilize this option to obtain their referral virtually. The Babylon Telus Health App is a great option for clients who do not have a regular care provider. https://www.babylonhealth.com/ca Also a template for a referral for massage therapy has been provided by my association to ensure the proper information is obtained. If you'd like one, feel free to message me and I can email it to you.

I hear people buzzing that RMTs might be able to go back to work... just waiting for confirmation on a date! Stay tuned!... Might get to use more of your 2020 benefits up!

Live Well! Massage Therapy 21.11.2020

With regards to having to get a Dr's prescription or written referral for massage therapy from a physio, chiro or other regulated health professional... you may be able to call. A lot of them are doing call in appointments or virtual sessions. I'm sure they may get a lot of calls about this... so it may not be as painful to obtain one. They may even be willing to forward it to me directly at [email protected] - if not to you at least. Worth a call!

Did you know therapeutic massage can be deeply relaxing, and relaxation massage can be therapeutic? Confusing right? That is why it is so important to discuss health history and treatment plan goals with your therapist, to customize your massage session according to your unique needs. It amazes me that I still meet people who believe massage is either 'relaxation' or getting brutalized - there is so much in between! Contact me for a free consult if you have any questions abo...ut how massage therapy can enhance your health and well-being. <3 Leanne Thompson, RMT

As part of a first time visit with me, new clients fill out a health history form and then we go over it together so I can ask in depth questions, to get a clearer picture of what their body has experienced in this life - yes, as potentially as far back as the beginning - to gain understanding of the adaptive patterns your body has been through leading to your current physical presentation and condition. This is the kind of clinically trained orthopedic RMT that I am. It will... ensure that I am safe, effective and conscientious in the treatment that I provide within the scope of my practice - offering results oriented massage therapy, unique to each individual. Dear Members, It has been a month since we have been able to return to work, and we hope everyone is adjusting to working in a pandemic setting. From what we ha...ve heard, many massage therapists have experienced full schedules upon returning, with little patient drop off so far. As the Alberta economy is opening, and people are venturing out in public, it is increasingly important that we remember that we are still enduring a global pandemic. Even with returning to work, and enjoying the summer weather, we must ensure that we are applying the principles of physical distancing and hand hygiene as much as possible. The MTAA Board of Directors would like to update you on the following information we have received from the Alberta government and the impact it will have on our members. Update to Pandemic Practice Directive The government of Alberta has issued some massage therapy specific recommendations pertaining to the usage of masks. It is now recommended by the government of Alberta that clients always wear non-medical face masks during a treatment. If a client has difficulty breathing while face-down during a massage, the mask may be removed. If the client is supine, they should be performing hand hygiene, and donning a face mask. In order to comply with the Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) recommendations, the MTAA is now recommending that all members develop a policy, that is communicated to your clients, that all clients are to wear a non-medical mask during treatment. If this presents as an issue to a client for any reason (medical or otherwise), it is up to the therapist to determine if there is a safe way to provide treatment, or, if the treatment will need to be re-scheduled until such time that masks are no longer required. Please use the following link to access the REVISED COVID 19 MTAA Pandemic Directive for Members https://www.mtaalberta.com/?page=451 As per the orders of the CMOH, all practitioners and businesses must comply, to the extent possible, with the COVID-19 General Relaunch Guidance, the Guidance for Wellness Services document, and any other applicable Alberta Health guidance. Please follow the link below for the Alberta government, Guidance for Wellness Services document. https://www.alberta.ca//covid-19-relaunch-guidance-wellnes Occupational Health and Safety Site Checks The MTAA has received notice that Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is conducting approximately 200 random checks of healthcare clinics and practitioners, specifically looking for compliance with COVID-19 guidelines. We have been informed that clinics will receive prior notification from OHS to schedule a time for the site visit and that these visits are meant to be more educational than punitive. The MTAA is aware of a few members that have already been contacted via telephone by OHS for a site inspection. If any members have questions regarding the requirements or legislation covered under the OHS act, please visit the following link for more specific information depending on your role within your company: https://ohs-pubstore.labour.alberta.ca/i-am-a As we continue to meet the public’s need for massage therapy during this global pandemic, please remember that the health and safety of yourself, your family, and your clients’ needs to be the number one priority. It can be uncomfortable, expensive, and cumbersome to follow all of the new pandemic practice directives, but these rules are enacted by our trusted medical experts to ensure we can practice in a safe environment with the hopes of being able to return to a non-pandemic state in the future. As an association, we are proud that our members are a valued part of the public’s healthcare team. MTAA massage therapists have been in high demand since re-opening, even when social distancing is recommended, and massage therapy cannot accommodate such provisions. You have demonstrated your professionalism and patient-centred care throughout these trying times, and it has not gone unnoticed. Thank you for leading your profession and representing yourselves and your association in such a fantastic manner. Stay well, MTAA Board of Directors

Alberta has given the go ahead for massage therapy to resume as early as June 12th. As long as Calgary is in agreement with that date... you should be seeing the return of massage services all over the province, very soon. To my clients, I will update you soon. I have to assess my schedule and ensure I have what I need to keep us both safe. I have always practiced a high level of cleanliness and sanitation in my treatments space - long before Covid, as per my training... the ...only real difference is we will more than likely be wearing masks in the earlier stages of re-opening. Please let me know what would make you feel most comfortable.

Live Well! Massage Therapy 17.05.2020

Hey everyone, hope you are keeping safe and are well. Starting to get a little more inquiry as to if I am taking clients yet... massage therapy has been government mandated to be closed down BUT, we have finally been given a TENTATIVE date of June 19th as to when we might be able to open again. Chiropractic and physiotherapy has reopened in phase one, so is currently available to you if you are really struggling as you wait to access massage therapy services again.... Can't wait to see you all again soon, Leanne Thompson, RMT

Live Well! Massage Therapy 14.03.2020

Leanne is a 2200hr massage therapist from Halifax, NS, who specializes in myofascial release. This approach to massage involves techniques to improve pain and chronic tensions caused by restrictions within the connective tissue system - which is continuous throughout the entire body, potentially affecting function and/or creating symptoms just about anywhere. You are a walking picture of everything your body has ever experienced. Leanne will go over your health history with ...you, looking for events and patterns that may have contributed to what you are experiencing today in order to be as safe and effective as possible in achieving your treatment goals. She will listen to the body to bring a deeper sense of relaxation that can last beyond time spent on the massage table, that comes from returning the body back to neutral alignment, reducing postural tension. Myofascial Release, Trigger Point Therapy, Deep Tissue Massage, Craniosacral Therapy, Visceral Manipulation, Lymphatic Balancing and Cupping are just some of the modalities Leanne may incorporate. She also offers Clinical Breast Massage and Intra-Oral massage. Ask what is appropriate for you! Leanne understands that everything (including the body) is energy and has also trained in various forms of energy healing work - such as Reiki, Pranic Healing and the Akashic Records to name a few. She has always been interested in human behavior, emotion and the mind-body connection, so has enjoyed studying some psychology and Life Coaching as well. You don't have to feel tomorrow, how you are feeling today! ~ Leanne Thompson, RMT
