Comment if you agree I remember when I was getting ready to run the first heat of the 200-meter. One of the kids looked jacked and lean in his flashy tights. He looked flawless, everyone was watching him. His warm-up, his A skips and B skips, form, and technique coming out of the blocks were picture perfect. Straight out of a textbook. There we were, staring & admiring his magnificent form. I remember saying to myself, We are about to get embarrassed.... The race got started, we all lined up, and the gun went off. I just ran and ran and by the time I was at the finish line, I looked back and he was nowhere close to any of us. He got smoked! He came second to last in the heat of an eight-man race, and he did not make the semis. That has stuck with me to this day. I have never forgotten that moment and what it meant for my journey as a strength coach. I set out to do my own research and development, learning from some of the best sprinting coaches in the world. This research has led me to conclude that modern-day athletes and coaches are overemphasizing techniques when they haven’t taken care of the foundation. I am not saying the technique isn’t important, because it is. But to build speed and acceleration is 95% force production and 5% technique. How I ingrain technique into our athletes is to have them perform warm-up drills like A’s and B’s properly, but then when they are on the starting line, their only focus is to sprint as fast as possible. Tag someone who's a great coach We’re coaches. A coach does not just make you go through exercises. They take the time to educate WHY it’s important, how it’s all connected, and the mindset needed.... A coach does not rep count for you. They observe for body language, cues, and movement velocity and patterns. A coach does not always follow the program. They adjust quickly based on the observations above. A coach does not stop at an hour. They prepare hours ahead, and they reassess hours after. It is an art. A coach does not put your weights away. They focus on pushing you beyond your mental and physical limits, safely. A coach does not want to keep you forever. They want to graduate you and make you as self sufficient as possible because in life, the only person you can always count on, is yourself. See more

Do you agree with this process? Comment below Before we do any type of heavy training, we must balance the body first as the foundation. Now, I am not talking about doing exercises on a Bosu ball type of balance training, no. Stay away from that unless it is for rehabilitation.... I am stressing the importance of addressing the limitations, because this will minimize the risk of injuries while training and also playing in your sport, therefore creating a longer career. To address these limitations, we start off improving the mobility under load, strengthening the weak ligaments, tendons, and joints. The basic principle to balance your body is to work on the front and back of the body called the agonist antagonists. That means if you are going to work on your biceps, you also work on your triceps. If you are going to work on your quads, you also work on your hamstrings. All of these exercises must always be done to the full range of motion as it promotes healthy tissues, flexibility, and mobility in the joints, ligaments, and tendons. This is a snippet from our latest book Dominate: They Can’t Ignore You. Gift this book to someone you love, as this will positively change the way they train to become dominant.

Last week we discussed how we can use overloading techniques to help an athlete that may have plateaued in an exercise. One of those techniques is the eccentric hooks for the bench press. This is for advanced or intermediate athletes only. With the eccentric hooks, we can add an extra 20-40% of their usual load, and overload the movement eccentrically. We advise the athlete to take about 6 seconds to bring down the weight eccentrically, and once the hooks hit the ground an...d fall off, BOOM! The athlete explodes up and completes the rest of the reps with speed. This overloading technique will condition the body to get accustomed to higher loads faster. Watch the full video on YouTube (link in bio) to learn more in depth about the process and protocols of using the boards for bench press within an exercise program. We all have our own mantras, our favourite music, our favourite teams and players that help and inspire us to our goals when we are in the thick of training. It may be during the development of the technical skill of your individual sport or it may be strength training to compliment your specific sport. You might be a beginner or recognized nationally/internationally for your athletic achievement. What will set you apart though is consistency. Not just showing up, but the... quality in what you do, when you do. Yes, you are going to make mistakes, but you pivot, adapt, and get stronger. This only happens through consistency. Are you showing up consistently and doing the bare minimum or are you putting in high quality work, going the extra mile, getting in early, focusing on recovering, blocking out distractions, eating properly, dialing into each rep, training when no one else is around, encouraging growth of your training partners, and the last one to leave? As someone who has spent many years as a national swimmer and water polo player for my home country of Barbados there is a lot that goes through your head when looking at the bottom pool lap after lap, week after week, month after month, year after year. Consistency compounds has always kept me going, through grueling early morning practices in cold water, through debilitating injury and rehab, through swim competitions, through setting records, through failure, and through the world shifting during this pandemic. You must not give in. Quality of your consistency and hard work won’t just create positive habits, but will create space between you and the competition, while also moving you closer to your ultimate goals. Whether you are an athlete or executive, you have the choice to become dominant and that starts with the right attitude. Growth and performance will happen outside your comfort zone. If you feel you are ready to take the next step, we will be in your corner (train online anywhere at www.lps.fit). Consistency compounds your success is on you. Stay with it, stronger people are harder to surpass in sport and in life. TIME TO DOMINATE! Coach Alan See more

Does it matter what time of the day you workout? YES. From a physiological perspective, working out in the morning has many benefits, especially for those looking to burn fat. By working out in the morning, your body has the rest of the day to burn calories and stimulate your metabolism (which aids in fat loss). Workouts in the evening can cause high levels of cortisol at night (affecting sleep) and it can be harder to potentiate growth hormone. BUT at the end of the da...y, everyone has different schedules, and it’s always better to workout any time of the day than to not workout at all. Watch the full episode on YouTube (link in bio). If you pick up the latest game of EASports FIFA20 you will notice that Adama Traore of the Wolves has blistering sprint speed, acceleration, power, and strength on his player card. However, this should come to you as no surprise, as his real-life training mimics a perfect blend of strength training, core training, and sprint work designed to expose his athletic potential. He has his flaws, but as a professional has been working diligently in his off-seasons to better his game... when it comes to skills, tactics, and decision-making (cognitive skills training). What he lacks in skill, he definitely makes up in the realm of strength and conditioning. His physical potential demonstrates quite clearly that strength is important, even in so-called endurance sports. Soccer players take note. Traore also boasts the title of fastest man in the English Premier League, one of Europes top-flight soccer leagues, and rightfully so. GPS in-game metrics have shown this to be accurate. Just take a look at his contribution to a Wolves side that downed the champions, Manchester City, last season. Traore rarely ever discusses his rigorous training, because he knows his competitive edge and wants to keep it a secret. He incorporates a plethora of bodyweight training for his foundation and builds off that with maximal effort, and repeated-effort methods for both weight-training and running. He has become an integral part of a Wolves team that is blossoming into a serious contender in English football. He has been amongst the most number of counter-attacking plays, while also leading the league in fouls committed against him. Would you want him on your team? What if you stop doing what everyone was doing, and think like Adama, think about how you can do it differently and become an undeniable force? @ LPS Athletic Centre

German Volume Training (GVT) training programs target a group of motor units, exposing them to an extensive volume of repeated efforts. The body adapts to the extraordinary stress by hypertrophying the targeted fibres (building lean body mass). GVT was popularized by renowned Strength Coach Charles Poliquin. He adopted the program from Rolf Feser, the coach of the German national weightlifting team, as well to bulk up some of his lifters. ... The goal of the German Volume Training method is to complete ten sets of ten reps with the same weight for each exercise. You want to begin with a 60% of 1RM with an exercise that recruits the most motor units. Once you are able to complete all 10x10 with relative success, increase the weight up to 5% the next training sessions.

You can't change what happened yesterday, but you can change what happens today. Smart people tells themselves smart lies = excuses. You can make excuses all you want, the only person that it truly affects is you. I didn't get enough sleep - Go to bed earlier. I don't have time - Get off social media.... I don't know the right people - Go and find the right people. I'm not ready yet - Stop being ready, and just start doing them. Excuses often times are just fears in disguise. You CAN however control many things to name a few: Your time, your focus, your commitment, your accountability, your character, your attitude, your expectations, how many hours you put into something, who your friends are, what you stand for, your health, and your happiness. Most people quit at the brink of success. Were neurologically wired to be safe. However, safe doesnt allow you to grow. It doesnt allow you to evolve, push through boundaries, become someone you never thought you could be. We had one athlete who started training with me a season ago. He wasnt sure what he was getting into, but he knew we build some serious monstas.... He said, Im ready for this. but in the back of my mind, we've heard it a million times. Everybody wants to be a monsta, until they see (and feel) what a monsta does. After 2-3 weeks of training, he began to feel sore in areas hes never been sore before (sorry, he was weak). He complained, but we told him, dont stop. He questioned, but he listened. We modified the exercises. He felt sorer, and his body is telling him to stop. We told him to grind through it. It was psychological toughness -- we werent 100% sure he was going to get through it. But he showed up the next day. When he couldnt do legs, he did arms. When he couldnt do arms, he did back. When he couldnt do back, he did fingers and toes. He listened and he never stopped. Weeks go by, and months go by - he hit new heights. Pushing weights hes never thought he could. He was running faster, exploding out of the blocks faster, cutting faster. He felt stronger physically and mentally, and he was on the field proving it. We so proud of him. We almost lost him, but we can proudly say that I respect not how much weight he pushes, but his attitude, dedication, and commitment to the process. Failure is not falling down, it is not getting up again. See more

There is this fascination with programs that I never quite understood. In the past, I would not even write a program until I see my member in-person. What Ive found over my years is that programs in itself are not dynamic, like human performances, environment, and psychological moods. When I see an athlete touching themselves, I notice. If they are rubbing their back, their legs, their arms, I know something is wrong. Thats the ar...t of coaching. Seeing things that are dynamic. This experience beyond the paper program is how we can keep our athletes uninjured, and we can push the boundaries of their own limited belief. For example, if the program calls for someone to squat 80% of their maximum, and I see the athletes struggling at 80% call it on the 2nd set of the 5 sets. Most of the time, I would tell them to lower the weight and move faster. A program on a piece of paper or on an app would not account for that, nor would the athlete know unless they have this knowledge and experience. This is why coaching is an art, and is vitally important to an athletes success. Identical programs can be executed completely different, yielding different results. The environment you also work out in -- are the people around you pushing you, or do they just see you as taking up space in the gym? Choose to become better, when you surround yourself with like-minded individuals. #strengthandconditioning #weightlifting #performancetraining #injurypreventation #athlete #athletetraining #coaching #artofcoaching #coacheseye See more

Hard work becomes easy work, hard work becomes easy work. This mantra was led by Mark Friedman, an animal in the gym and a fierce competitor. He squats over 185kg (407lbs) ass to grass, cleans 135kg (300lbs), bench presses 143kg (315lbs) and chin-ups 55kg (121lbs) strapped to him all for a single rep. This kid packs a powerful strike, and is tremendously strong and smart.... But the greatest attribute is his work ethic! He skates early morning, shows up in the gym afterward to train, skates after training sessions, and does hills on weekends. Mark will tell you Hard Work Becomes Easy Work. You will adapt, and when you do, you will be at another level. Others just wont be able to keep up to you, and it's a fact. This young kid is an animal, and he makes it impossible for you to keep up. With a competitive mindset, he will run you into the ground. I hear so many people chant No days off but cant walk the walk. Mark talks the talk and walks the walk, and then some. He takes NO DAYS OFF! That is who Mark Friedman is and that's why we are so proud of him. Training him for 7 years plus and watching his growth is rewarding as a coach. And for him to take time out of his busy schedule to let me know he got called up to play for the Philadelphia Flyers tonight lets me know he appreciates what we do and our small role in his dream to becoming an NHL star. Why Should I Do an Assessment? Undergoing upper and lower body assessment can identify your limitations and set you up for better long-term progress. They can catch potential injuries before they become an issue and prevent against issues caused by the repetitive movements common in many sports. Congratulations to Roya for taking home GOLD at the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2019 for Team Canada. She embodies our essence of a wolf. She trains hard, even when times were rough, even when she was sore, she continued to train. The adaptation process took place, and she soared. She was hard to deal with even though her competitor was 10 lbs bigger than her. Dont tell me strength doesnt matter! As a coach, there is nothing I love more than to coach and observe the best in the world at World competitions. This September, I was one of the coaches for Team Canada at the IWF World Championships in Pattaya, Thailand. I felt like a kid in a candy store. But the key is to observe. From the rest area to the training hall, to the stage, I watched closely and made hundreds of notes, and it all boils down to this one thing that we can all take away from these world-class champ...ions. You can read about that one thing is the article we just published in the link in our bio (@lpsathletic) or type it out: https://lpsathletic.com/the-one-thing-you-must-do-to-becom/ Also, if there is one simple truth you can takeaway, it is: You need to get so good at something, you cant be ignored. You may not like this, but the cold fact is that nobody gives a shit about your past, your circumstances, and/or what challenges youve gone through. Sure they may be important and you may be right, but until you leave someone in awe, none of those things matter. Leave the average training to average gyms. There are no real shortcuts to success. Throughout my 30+ years in the strength & conditioning world, seeing & trying ""innovative"" product after product promising they will get the same results in 50% of the time, almost all of them fail. The only true performance results I've seen are the ones that put real work in. If you spent the effort it took looking for an easy way out... to actually do the work, you'd be much further ahead by now. Physiological Maturity -- If you are mature enough to participate in a sport, you should understand the need to condition your body to take on the rigors of it. Your body must be prepared to meet the demands of the challenge. If you are a young kid, you may be participating in 2 or more sports at the same time (hockey, karate, tennis, etc.), and this puts tremendous stress on your body and finding time to perform strength training becomes impossible at times.... In a society with many psychologists call hyperparenting, time schedules may be limited at best and strength training is often the first activity removed from your developmental plan. More often today, I notice young athletes go into a competitive season with almost no physical preparation to meet the demands of the sport. And this is directly correlated to the expotential massive increase in injuries in all sports over the past 10 years. You MUST separate yourself from the pack, and you MUST get better prepared to withstand the impacts of your sport whether its contact or non-contact. ##youthtraining #youthtrainingcamp #physiologicalmature #maturity #strengthandconditioning #strengthtraining #relentlesspreparations #stress #stressmanagement #youthsports #athletes #athletetraining #legsfeedthewolf #trusttheprocess @ LPS Athletic Centre

I never thought about my daily preparation. It wasnt a matter of whether it was an option or not. It was, if I want to play, this is what I have to do, so Id just show up and do it. My routine was grueling. It involved early mornings and late nights. It involved stretching, lifting, training, hooping, recovery, and film study. It involved putting in a lot of work and hours. Its--no lie--tiring. For that reason, a lot of players pare down their lifting and training during t...he season. They try conserving their energy. Not me, though. I found that, yes, this work might be strenuous on the day-to-day, but it left me stronger and more prepared during the dog days of the season and the playoffs. - @kobebryant Hard work becomes easy work. ____________________________________ If you have not done so already, go get The Mamba Mentality book. #SuccessLeavesClues #LearnFromSuccess #Motivation #Inspiration #NBA #MambaMentality #BasketballTraining #BallisLife #StrengthandConditioning #Training #KobeBryant #GOAT

Baseball Catcher Kristyan Puyol (@puyol2451) shares his experience: Before coming to LPS, I was training out of York University in the track, with a hes an excellent runner, coach. He does a lot of running and a lot of like speed work. And I kind of went for a few weeks for a month and I found that wasnt really working for me. I lost a little bit of weight, but I was like, Im not getting stronger. I dont really need to get fast, right. I play baseball, Im trying to get... explosive speed and as much as he was building up my cardio and things like that, I found like it wasnt really working. So I was like, you know what, I kind of needed a change. So I asked my good friend John Nardi, whos here as a weightlifter and he recommended coming to the gym. So I was like, you know what, lets give this a shot. The results are unbelievable. I was never expecting to hit 180kg back squat, EVER. I was never expecting that, I was thinking, I started coming to LPS at 22% body fat. I was expecting maybe to go down to 18, maybe like 17 at most. I went all the way in six weeks down to 15% body fat and my friends and family and my mom especially, they were super impressed with the results and personally I couldnt be happier.. The culture at LPS is super competitive. Youre always trying to out-do your next man even though its not a competition. Its just everyones driving each other. Its not just youre there by yourself with a coach trying to spot you. Its if youre trying to max, lets say a back squat, you got people yelling at you just to keep driving. You got coach Clance on your back telling you keep pushing no matter what. His favorite line is, oxygen, just to yell, oxygen. Everyone in here are great people. Everyone in here is supporting one another. Its the best experience in a gym in my entire life for sure and my baseball career. _________________________________ You can get the full story at https://lpsathletic.com/ig or the link in our bio. #SuccessLeavesClues #LearnFromSuccess #Motivation #Inspiration #Baseball #BaseballPlayer #baseballlife #baseballislife

We spend so much time and effort on everything around us, our cars, our homes, but we don't focus on our own bodies." - Al Guarino Al is 63 years old, and has started training just 2 years ago. Age is just a number. No matter where you are, what stage your health is at, the hardest and most important thing to do, is to just get started.

Functional movement training doesnt just strengthen one muscle group at a time. Basically, functional movement training is all about training movements, not muscles. It mirrors how humans were meant to move, and helps to make us move even better. ~ Yuri Elkaim To define the type of movement training I am referring to is not for individuals who want to carry their groceries up a flight of stairs or the ones who want to get back in shape aesthetically and for everyday lif...e. I am specifically referring to high powered, fast explosive sports like Hockey, Baseball, Football, Soccer, Tennis, MMA, etc. The term functional or movement training gets lost in all this gobbly gook and we forget about simple terms such as motor unit activation. To be dominant in sport an athlete must learn how to activate higher threshold motor units to get stronger, faster and explosive. High threshold or fast motor units are NOT activated unless you are working at 80% plus. So if you are on a swiss ball or some sort of balance apparatus still, its time to get off and do the real work of building rate of force development. Go get it! @ LPS Athletic Centre

Do you often give up on our goals because the results are not apparent immediately? The society we live in today has now been designed in a way that makes people crave instant results. The principles that have created champions for centuries (work hard, stay consistent and be patient) are not sexy or cool anymore. This is why it is so hard for most of us to stick to the goals that we may have set for ourselves. A reason why most of us dread putting in the work.... We focus on the results so much so that we make it easy on ourselves to give up. The work you do today doesnt always pay today (process). But it pays (results). Many of our athletes will say, trust the process and there is a reason for it. 1. More Confidence & Accountability - The results are an external factor and something that you cant control 100%. But showing up and doing the work, you can control all of that. 2. Become More Focused - You immediately stop getting distracted by shortcuts or any distractions that may steer you off course. Remember, what Pros do on Instagram today, are not what got them there in the first place. 3. Happier - When you are always future-focused, not getting there soon enough will ultimately make you depressed, especially on social media platforms where 99% of people only post the look how great I am type of content. Dont buy into that bull. 4. Appreciation & Gratitude - Something that is easily earned, is easily taken for granted. Without going through adversity/failures/missed attempts, its impossible to appreciate the success when it pays. @ LPS Athletic Centre

It's not the horse that gets out the gate the fastest, it's the horse that can finish strong. One of our hardest working athletes, Maya (71kg), just won gold at the 2019 Commonwealth Senior Championships in Samoa. This was an Olympic qualifying event. And were proud! Not just of the accomplishment of a gold medal, but the continuous preparation, training, focus, and motivation. When days are good, she trains. When days are tough, she trains. When days are bad, she trains.... When the competition is over, she is training right after. Results are merely the by-product of the relentless pursuit of ones dream. Thank you to those who continue to support her every step of the way! And of course, her teammates, comrades in battle back at the gym cheering her on @j.nards67, @lewlewlemon81, @izzy8482 & @dwill.thevision_. One step closer to 2020 Olympics In Tokyo! #Dominate #JustDream @teamcanada @drvanderdoelen, @powerperformancesystems @petrocanadafuelsathletes _________________________________________ WEIGHTLIFTING CLINIC: Coach Maya coaches Olympic Weightlifting to limited number of beginners and intermediate lifters, if you are interested, just DM us and well send you the details. #CantStopWontStop #TeamCanada #OlympicWeightlifting #Snatch #CleanandJerk #OlympicGames #DreamCrazier #Nike #petrocanadaFACE @ Samoa

BECOME A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE? Statistically speaking, * Hockey: ~0.4% or 1 in 250 high school athletes get drafted by an NHL team.... * Baseball: ~0.5% or 1 in 200 high school athletes get drafted by an MLB team. * Football: ~0.1% or 1 in 1,000 high school athletes get drafted by a NFL/CFL team. * Basketball: ~0.03% or 1 in 4,000 high school athletes get drafted by a NBA team. Now think about that for a minute. Let it sink in. Now be honest with yourself Are you or your kids the most talented and/or physically gifted? Chances are, probably not. But thats how the sport farming, scouting, and system is designed. If you run people through the same factory, only the most talented and/or physically gifted athletes will succeed and be a professional athlete. In most sports today, you have over 80% talented and/or physically gifted athletes drafted by professional sports federations. That means the remaining 20% (out of the average 0.5%), get drafted by outworking the rest of the pack, outside of the templated system. If you do the same thing everyone is doing, youll get the same results or worse. You also need to consider that athletes participate in sports for a wide variety of reasons. Some play to get paid. Some play because its fun. And some must play just to put food on the table. What are you playing for?
