Even with the fresh snow, there is still wildlife about! A cougar was recently spotted at the Canmore Nordic Centre. It's a great reminder to always be aware and to carry your bear spray whenever you venture into the wild.

t’s that time of year in the Rockies - elk rutting season. Our #liveandletwild feature photographer Tina Antrobus (of @tinalovesnature on Instagram) captured this tender moment from a safe distance using a telescopic lens. Always give wildlife space... We love #connectivity! Wildlife crossing structures help save lives while allowing wildlife to roam where they need to.

Please keep a clean campsite when you are visiting the Canadian Rockies (or any park for that matter!) Leaving food attractants at picnic sites or campgrounds leads to habituated wildlife. Not only is this dangerous for humans, but can lead to animals being destroyed by wildlife managers. If you love our wild places, here is how you can help:... Always put food or garbage in a campground food locker or in your vehicle Never feed wildlife Never leave food or garbage unattended at your campsite or picnic table, even for a few minutes

We have sadly lost another wild grizzly in the Rocky Mountains. There is some bittersweetness to this story, since it is the first grizzly death on the tracks in Banff National Park since 2012. We are all learning in this journey of wildlife coexistence - but we will need to do better. Here is what you can do when you are visiting Banff: Respect speed limits... Give all wildlife (especially bears!) space Never ever feed wildlife See more

Have you heard that distinct wailing bugle at dusk? It's elk rutting season! Rutting season is another way of saying the 'mating season'. Male elk, called bulls, will gather and defend female elk, called cows. It's a dynamic and exciting time of year. It's also important to give elk space during the rutting season. Bulls are hopped up on testosterone and can be unpredictable and aggressive. ... Do not approach elk for photos Give all wildlife space to allow them to be wild For more info, visit our interactive website: https://bit.ly/3b1VQ3X

It's still berry season out there! In and around Banff National Park, grizzly bears have been documented eating more than 200,000 buffalo berries in a single day! While berries are nice to grow in the yard because they are so danged tasty, they are also attractants for bears. ... An easy thing you can do to support peaceful human-wildlife coexistence is to remove fruit-bearing trees and bushes from your yard. Then check out your local farmer's market to stock up on fresh berries instead! An oldie, but a goodie! This classic timelapse made up of Banff National Park 's remote wildlife camera images will amaze you about how much goes on a single trail over the course of a year. And it all happened a short two-and-a-half-hour stroll from the hustle and bustle of downtown Banff! It goes to show how alive the woods are and, if you get into them, what you might be lucky enough to see!... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MiVWM3SZAY&t=154s

There is still time to get wild in the Rockies this summer Our #liveandletwild feature adventurer Jill Sakowsky has some advice to help you to travel safely where wildlife roam:... " SING AT THE TOP OF YOUR LUNGS! I always make sure animals know I’m there so I don’t startle them, but am prepared with bear spray, my Garmin inreach, and I always let someone know where I am going incase I don’t return by the time I said I was. I also pack all my food in ziplocks and pack in what I pack out. Most of all, always respect the wildlife and the land we are privileged enough to venture on." Meet our #liveandletwild feature researcher, Sarah Elmeligi Sarah is currently working with @CPAWS Southern Alberta for Bow Valley and National Park conservation issues. Much of this has focused on the current Banff National Park management planning process currently underway.... She is also working with Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative on a proposal for recreation and ecological conservation of the Castle and Porcupine/Livingstone area of southern Alberta. In both of these projects, she strives to find ways that people can have access to amazing recreational opportunities and wildlife can continue to thrive in our Albertan wilderness.
