[33/150] #MacBrideMinutes, Buzzsaw Jimmy This week we will be showcasing one of the Yukon’s most interesting businessmen, Buzzsaw Jimmy. James Richards, also known as Buzzsaw Jimmy, came to the Yukon in 1898. He leased space along Whitehorse's waterfront in order to operate a sawmill in 1910. The business shut down a few years afterwards but, Jimmy persevered by inventing a buzzsaw on wheels. The saw consisted of an old tractor, a Model T Ford and other iron scraps. With hi...s tractor wood saw, Buzzsaw Jimmy could cut eight to ten cords an hour. Jimmy left the Yukon in the late 1960’s and passed away shortly after. The first image is of Buzzsaw Jimmy and his tractor wood saw. The second is a photo of his business ledger. More objects like this are on display at MacBride! We are open with our winter hours. If you have any question please call (867) 667-2709 or visit us today!

[32/150] #MacBrideMinutes, Printing Press The press (serial no. D1129) was made in Cleveland, Ohio, at the turn of the century and was one of the first ever used in the Yukon. It made its way to Whitehorse via Bennett, BC, in the year 1900, and was used by the Whitehorse Star the first "gold rush" paper until the 1940s. Its history is linked to the settlement of the Yukon, the Klondike gold rush, and the WP&YR. After a long period of deterioration, the Press was complete...ly restored by MacBride’s partners at the Canadian Conservation Institute in 1995. More objects like this are on display at MacBride! We are open with our winter hours. If you have any question please call (867) 336-1460 or visit us today!

[31/150] #MacBrideMinutes, Orpheum Theatre The Orpheum Theatre, onced owned by "Klondike" Kate, was once known for hosting the dance hall girls of the klondike. During those times, the theatre would be packed with prospectors who filled the stage with gold dust for their favourite performer. After the Klondike gold rush, Yukoners still had the need for entertainment, the theatre continued to provide this. Eventually, they started showing motion pictures for the northerners of... Dawson City. The motion picture projector, in the second image, was used at the theatre. The projector consists of a Century projector, a Peerless Magnarc lamp and a Photophone sound attachment which all stand on a base. More artifacts are on display at MacBride! Call 667-2709 to book your visit today!

[30/150] #MacBrideMinutes, Taylor and Drury Store This month we will be showcasing artifacts and stories from the Yukon after the Klondike Gold Rush. After the gold rush was over, the vast majority of the prospectors headed back home or onto the next gold rush. The people who stayed helped to build the Yukon we know today! The Yukon's longest lived and largest merchandising firm, Taylor and Drury, opened their first store in 1898 in Atlin, BC to sell essentials to the prospec...tors. They moved to Whitehorse in July 1900, after the railways was completed and set-up their tent at First Avenue and Elliot Street. Nineteen posts were built over their 70 years of business. Taylor and Drury closed its doors in 1974. The second photo shows a token that would’ve been used at the store. T&D produced their own coins as they were as they were cheaper than having enough coins to last until the spring and coins were also difficult to access. Due to their constant use, T&D tokens were accepted at local banks until 1930. MacBride has reopened. Call 667-2709 to book your visit today! We have also introduced our 2020 Music@MacBride. Check out our previous posts to learn about our line up!
