Chebogue Schoolhouse is over on the Architectural Record front page today!
Refuge Cabin is complete! Built over 3 summers under the tutelage of Talbot, Diana Carl and Will Green, 30 Dalhousie University students helped design and craft this shelter in the forest. Composed of local Hemlock, Cedar and Pine, as well as some reclaimed lumber, this project aimed to develop an understanding of innovative wood design at many scales from balloon framing to the finely crafted detail. Thank you to the students for their participation and hard work. Refuge D...esign-Build Team: Miranda Bailey, Matthew Bishop, Izak Bridgman, Heather Gibbons, Will Green, Justin Kennedy, Piotr Kolodziej, Neal Mackie, Glen Nicholson, Alex Weaver, Logan Brown, Dean Dumaresq, Megan Florizone , Jason Horner, Matthew Jarvis, Carolyn Keeley, Madeline King, Hamid Mohammadi, Ryan Radics, Stacey Wilson, Vincent Zhuang, Nick Breault, Andrew Carruthers, Matthew Kijewski, Adrienne MacIntosh, Matthew MacKay-Lyons, Tara McCashin, Mahsa Shobbar, and Samuel Walther-Battista. Progress shots of Refuge Free Lab. WIndows are in, and the hearth is taking shape.
Last Wednesay, under a high summer sun, Brian and Peter attended a sculpture unveiling at the home of longtime clients, The Leahey's. "Rua" a sculpture by Robert Murray joined the field of pavilions that we have built with The Leahey's over the last 20 years. In addition to the sculpture, a 5th pavilion - a guest house - was added to the site earlier this year, completing this cluster of modern gabled buildings on the Northumberland Shores of Nova Scotia. Thank you to The Leahey's for their hospitality and years of patronage.
Talbot's Refuge Freelab is in full swing! Students have joined Talbot for two weeks this summer to finish designing and crafting this cabin in the woods. Photo's of the completed project to come!
Congratulations to our colleague and fellow Maritime Architect Omar Gandhi on his prestigious Prix de Rome win!

Were excited to be heading down to Lunenburg County on Monday to interview Brian MacKay-Lyons of MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects Limited in Halifax, this ye...ars recipient of the 2014 Architectural Firm Award. Stay tuned for some behind-the-scenes photos of one of his new projects. Here is our story on an incredible home Brian designed in Pugwash Point (Pic by James Ingram): http://eastcoastliving.ca/2010/11/building-field-of-dreams/
Congratulations to longtime colleague and friend Peter Busby on his RAIC Gold Medal. "Peter Busby is an excellent choice for the 2014 RAIC Gold Medal. He has been a respected colleague and friend for more than 20 years. We served on the National Capital Commissions Advisory Committee on Planning, Design and Realty together for many years. Quite simply, in Canada and in the US, Peter has brought the environmental sustainability movement out of the horseless carriage phas...e. In contrast with the current corporate greenwashing bandwagon, he gives a voice to the possibility of green design along with strong formal design skill in the modern rational tradition of his mentor Norman Foster. He sees environment as a form generator." - Brian MacKay-Lyons (via Canadian Architect) For more on Peter's outstanding contributions to architectural practice in Canada, and his commitment to environmental sustainability follow the link below.

We at MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects were deeply saddened to learn of the devastating fire at The Glasgow School of Art today. It is an immeasurable loss for our global architecture community, architectural history and the country of Scotland. Our hearts go out to the students and teachers of The Glasgow School of Art affected by the loss of this Arts and Crafts masterpiece and are thankful no-one was hurt.
Talbot's Scotland trip continues today where he is a guest critique for reviews at University of Strathclyde Glasgow. Best of luck to the student's presenting today.
Many thanks to East Coast Living Magazine for their kind words of support.
Talbot will be giving a lecture at the historic The Glasgow School of Art this afternoon! Titled "Place and Craft," he'll present his lecture in the beautiful Mackintosh Lecture Theatre at 3pm.
