This weekend will mark 2 years since we released the Learning from Nelson Mandela report about youth solitary confinement and pepper spray use in Manitoba. While the province has made some progress on 42% of recommendations, only 1 of the 6 recommendations has been completed so far. Happy Tuesday! For #BlackHistoryMonth, we’re sharing stories for children and youth. Today, let’s learn about Herb Carnegie (November 8, 1919-March 9, 2012). Carnegie was arguably the first Black Canadian hockey star and a member of the Black Aces, the first all-Black line in hockey (outside the Coloured Hockey League of the Maritimes). He played competitive hockey in the 1940s and 1950s, mostly in the Québec and Ontario Junior A and senior leagues. Carnegie is widely regar...ded (as) the best Black player never to compete in the National Hockey League... Carnegie was a recipient of the Order of Canada and was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. ^Information from the Canadian Encyclopedia https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca//arti/herb-carnegie

Today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay. In Manitoba and across Canada, youth suicide rates are alarmingly high. In our province, the Manitoba Advocates research found that suicide has become the leading manner of death for youth ages 10-17. The data are clear: the most pressing health issue for children and youth in our province today is mental health and addictions. We have lost 145 children and youth to suicide in the last 10 years and that should be all the evidence we ne...ed to understand young people are hurting and what we have to offer them needs to improve, Manitoba Advocate Daphne Penrose told media in May. If you or someone you know is struggling in Manitoba, please call the Manitoba Suicide Prevention and Support Line, 1-877-435-7170 or visit www.reasontolive.ca To learn more about #MACYs suicide research, visit https://manitobaadvocate.ca//reports-publi/public-reports/ Photo credit: Shannon VanRaes/Winnipeg Free Press

Every child has 42 rights under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Yet, whenever we talk with children and youth, we find some young people are surprised to know they have these rights! For the next 42 weeks, well be sharing weekly updates about the #UNCRC on our social media to help you #KnowYourRights. Well start with Article 6 - you have the right to not only live, but thrive! Article 6 of the UNCRC says that we want children to do much more than... merely survive their childhoods: we want them to thrive! As adults, we all have responsibilities to make that true for all children, everywhere. -Daphne Penrose, Manitoba Advocate for Children and Youth For the full list of 42 #UNCRC rights, visit our website: https://manitobaadvocate.ca/adult/helpful-resources/uncrc/
