Last week I had the pleasure of dining at The Lakehouse at Shawnigan Lake. My girlfriend and I were both so pleased with our meals and wine. We sat on the patio overlooking the lake, beautiful view!! They have done a wonderful job renovating it. Following all of the health precautions and distancing protocols. It is going to be a hot spot for sure. Great food, great wine selection & great service. And only 4 mins down the road. Well done!! We will be back!! The Lakehouse at Shawnigan

We finally had a chance to try the new restaurant in Shawnigan Village tonight! The Corner Table was outstanding! We will certainly be recommending it to our guests. They have a beautiful selection of local and other B.C. wines. And the food was spectacular. I devoured the scallops and pork belly entree. Service was wonderful and the ambience was perfect. What a wonderful couple that runs it! We look forward to returning soon!

Ryan T Townsend what a beautiful piece they did on you and your history. We are still so lucky & grateful to have found you and your amazing vision & talent to bring the Manor back to all its glory. For those of you who don’t know the beautiful ceilings and renos were all carefully hand crafted by Ryan. Plus he designed and carefully sought out all of our beautiful furnishing and refurbished them. We still don’t know what we would have done without you.

The main event was a house made 10lb Porchetta. This is about 1/3 of the way through the roasting process. And forgot to capture the final product. But the crackling was amazing! And so was the pork. Served with fancy mustards and pickled zucchini on a bun.

C1960s Joan Mason- Hurley / Shawnigan Beach Hotel Shawnigan Lake has been home to many creative talents over the past century, including world-renowned painter,... E.J. Hughes, and writer, Bruce Hutchison. Many other gifted writers and artists have come and gone at Shawnigan over the years, including Joan Mason-Hurley a great, great, great niece of writer Jane Austen. Joan Austen-Leigh was born in Victoria in 1920 to a British land surveyor and a university-educated mother. Her early childhood was spent with a governess and her upbringing adhered to the British dictum of children being seen and not heard but if children were to speak, it had to be with a proper British accent (which was cultivated for this Canadian born child). Following proper British tradition, Joan was educated at private boarding schools, first on Vancouver Island and then in England. In 1939, Joan married Denis Mason- Hurley and traded one double-barreled name for another. The sweethearts had met at the Shawnigan Beach Hotel when her family had stayed there. They were both thirteen at the time. For 25 years, Joan and Denis managed the successful Shawnigan Beach Hotel. In truth, the Mason-Hurleys’ barely eked out enough of a living during the five month hotel season to support their family of six over the year. The hotel was a popular destination and often families returned there for their summer vacations every year. As the children grew up, and married, many carried on the same tradition and brought their own families to stay. Guests were booked in by the week and the hotel was all-inclusive, providing the room, all of the meals and a range of activities. The small hotel catered to roughly 150 guests per week. During these busy years, Joan participated in a few drama productions at Shawnigan. The Mason-Hurleys’ sold the hotel in 1963. At the age of 48, Joan enrolled at UVic to begin her studies and to follow in the Austen family footsteps by becoming a writer. With the encouragement and support of Denis, she completed a Fine Arts Degree and a Masters of Fine Arts through UBC. Then she embarked on a very successful late-in-life career. Super proud of my cousin Suzanne Smith and her colleagues and this epic undertaking. I attended the open house this weekend; this facility is extraordinary! The planning that went into this project is amazing, no detail has been overlooked. WAVES is located at 947 Langford Parkway. So, to all my pet loving friends Emergency Animal hospital will be open very shortly!!

Mitch is working so hard to bring back even a small part of the glory from the previous owner. She was a brilliant gardener and it’s so hard so see all the damage. Hoping the plants will come back.
