Breaking Lessons and Sessions starts today with Josh Cameron. This learning and development space prioritizes BIPOC youth under 21 in New Westminster with breaking experience. This program is a weekly, in person drop in consisting of a formal lesson covering different fundamentals of Breaking (popularly referred to as breakdancing), the history, the techniques and culture and an open practice time where dancers are encouraged to use the space for self-development in dance. ... Dance is an activity that stems from and thrives in community! Participants need to bring indoor shoes. Registration limited to 10 to allow for appropriate social distancing. We've been the home of the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra for over 30 years (and they have been holding concerts for much longer than that) and we miss them terribly. Massey Theatre has not been the same these past eight months without the thousands of people in our audiences and on our stages bringing it to life. That uplifting energy and excitement of live performance is so very important. We have done everything possible to stay open in all possible adaptations to encourage that human spirit throughout the pandemic. That has meant safely presenting exclusive performances, hosting live streamed concerts and working with local artists and... community members to give children and youth a safe stage to support them. In 2021 we move into a renovation of the facility, a reimagined Massey Theatre and installation of new equipment to support creative programs in our new spaces. To assist with these large and much needed projects, we will require funds from a variety of sources, from large funders to members of the community we serve, like you. From the artist statement: Photography was my earliest entry into the creative arts and that was soon followed by music. My piano studies took over and, after earning a performance degree, I worked as a professional musician for several years in Toronto. ... A rekindled passion for photography has recently re-entered my life. After years of observations, I am exploring the intersections of photography and contemporary art, in particular the unseen elements of light and the layering of colour and shape. I explore techniques of capturing abstract effects in the camera, finding ways to extract ethereal qualities that are not visible at casual observation. In ‘developing’ the image, I tease out elements of light, colour and form to further explore the abstractions.
