History Lesson: This small building was the Teacherage of McLean Mill from 1930 -1934 when it became a small office and first aid building. When the McLean Mill School first opened Miss Sterling lived in the cabin until her replacement by Miss Manning. The cabin was divided into two sections, a kitchen/living room in the from and a bedroom in the back. The cabin was attached to the mill’s generator and had a 15-watt light bulb hanging from the ceiling; however coal oil lamp...s provided additional lighting as the generator was only turned on in the evening. After Miss Manning left in 1934, this building became a single room office for the next 10 years before transforming again into a first aid shed and finally a storage area. #localhistory #heritage #sawmill #steampowered #teacherage #school

Help Decorate the #FairyForest this weekend The Fairies have informed us that they are looking for Vancouver Island’s creative geniuses to add to the décor of the Fairy Forest Trail here at McLean Mill. This weekend between 10am and 4pm we will have complimentary wooden Halloween craft kits available for children ages 0 12 (while quantities last; one kit per child). With your safety in mind, we ask that you bring your own felts to decorate the crafts. We will have limi...ted colouring supplies available. Then leave your craft in the Fairy Forest for everyone to see and enjoy. Or if you prefer, bring a pre-made craft from home and drop it off for our fairies. Keep in mind, we are only able to accept items that are free from beads, tinsel, or any other materials that could become a hazard to the animals and wildlife that share the forest. Take a photo of your creation after it has been placed on the trail and then tag us on Facebook @mcleanmill or Instagram @mclean.mill The Fairies can’t wait to see your works of art. Crafts will be located outside in the Courtyard, weather permitting. If it’s raining, please see us in the Gift Shop to collect your craft. Deciding what to do this weekend? Stroll our park grounds. Did you know that all of the buildings were found in situ, meaning they have never been moved from their original location? Only one mechanical artefact had been... sold off (since recovered), meaning that most of this site is just how they would have left it. Things have been put back were they belong according to historical records and photographs to ensure as accurate a representation as possible. This level of preservation and accuracy can be rare for this type of site and is one of the only functioning. Cool right?
