One low moves out tonight, another moves in tomorrow night and looks to bring snow to the Avalon. Details on that, plus the potential to see the Northern Lights TONIGHT in tonight's forecast.
For those wondering if tomorrow is going to be windy, the answer is yes. Very much so. Widespread gusts over 100 km/h likely across southern, eastern and the coasts of Central NF and eventually Labrador.
IF skies can clear overnight, which they may in some areas, good chance of seeing the Northern Lights. Anywhere near, and north of, the purple line has the chance of seeing it. This includes the Metro region. Best chance is in a dark area with not a lot of light pollution. Look north.
Winter officially began this morning at 6:32 AM with the Winter Solstice. Today is the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere! In St. John's, sunrise is at 7:46 AM and sunset 4:12 PM, there is 8 hours, 25 mins and 56 seconds of daylight. We add 3 seconds to that tomorrow!
The weather outside may not be nice, but on my socks it’s a different story!
Good Wednesday morning, folks! Some of us are waking up to snow, some of us rain, some of us wind and some were woken up to thunder and lightning last night (not me). The area of low pressure responsible for our weather will pull away throughout the day and the weather will gradually improve beginning later this morning. Although flurries and/or showers may linger central and west and northwest into this evening. ... Looking over some traffic cameras, it appears as if the rain/snow line is somewhere between Clarenville and Gander this morning. It may gradually move eastward through the morning, but not much accumulation will be expected in areas that didn't see snow last night. Northern areas of the Burin Peninsula may also be seeing some snow in spots this morning. Winds will ramp up for the Avalon, Burin and Bonavista Peninsulas this morning, and will gust from the west as high as 90 to 100 km/h for a few hours before subsiding, slowly, this afternoon. I'll try and have a more detailed weather update for you this morning, but I've got a busy day both inside and outside of work. Stay safe. Be kind. Have a great day. Eddie

Few shots from earlier this evening taken in beautiful Port de Grave!
Temperatures go UP tomorrow and then DOWN for Sunday across much of the Island. In fact, highs on your Saturday may be as warm as 10 in some spots, while Sunday will see readings struggle to get above freezing. Labrador will see chilly temps on Saturday and chillier temps on Sunday.
The grand prize draw for a weather photo contest is tonight!
The next strong system rolls through the Province this coming Tuesday. As it stands now, the biggest hazards with this will be snow for northern and western Labrador, heavy rain on the Island and gusty winds for most. The gusty winds will, more than likely, hamper ferry ops from late Monday thru late Tuesday or Wednesday.
A little bit of wet snow and/or rain showers on the way for much of the Island tonight into Thursday. Following that, a big warming trend will take hold as we move into the weekend! #nlwx http://ntv.ca/eddies-wednesday-night-forecast-november-25-/
Area of light snow about to move across the Avalon during some of the morning commute. Roads over the western Avalon and Goobies are snow covered from this. Take your time out there!
WEATHER ALERT | Special Weather Statement(s) issued for Newfoundland and Labrador due to incoming storm during the early to mid part of the week. This system looks to bring rain and wind to the Island and snow, rain and wind to Labrador | #NLwx https://weather.gc.ca/warnings/index_e.html?prov=nl
Not only was the storm between Monday and Tuesday a single day record breaker, it was also a 2 day record breaker second only to January 14 and 15, 2006. Rain, and it's heavy, is moving from south to north across eastern Newfoundland very quickly at this hour. Should commence in Metro within the next hour.
Areas of flurries end this evening, before more flurries and/or showers move in later tonight. Friday will see areas of rain and snow across the Island, with snow in southern Labrador. Rain and snow amounts will be light as we close out the work week.

While heavy rain and snow are on the way for many today, I'm more concerned about the high winds that will be felt for many. Here is a forecast of when you can expect the highest winds in your area! The forecast for some areas may be overdone, and the forecast for some areas, like around Forturne / Placentia Bays, may be underdone. Stay safe!... Eddie *NO SOUND*
Satellite and Radar Imagery | December 18, 202 | NO SOUND Area of low pressure south of the Island this morning brought snow to much of NS/PEI last night. Some areas of the Avalon have seen some light snow as well. Due to low's track being more east than northeast, the precip. will generally stay to our south today. #nlwx
The weather calms down overnight for much of NL, and cools down as well. Areas of flurries along the West Coast. Quiet and breezy weather across the region tomorrow, with a few flurries late in the day along the West Coast and in Labrador West.
Atlantic Canada is one of the safest places in North America. Now let’s do our part to keep it that way in the fight against COVID-19!
An area of low pressure will move through the region Monday into Monday night. The low will bring areas of heavy rain to Newfoundland and eastern Labrador, heavy snow to northern and western Labrador and highs winds for many. In fact, I think the biggest impact from this storm moving through will be the high winds. Many areas across the Island will see winds gusting near, if not over, 100 km/h from the south or south southeast Monday afternoon and evening, before calming down overnight. I break it all down for you in tonight's vlog!
The waves at Middle Cove Beach were absolutely massive today! I was one of many out snapping photos of these monsters!
So far 70 cm of snow has fallen at Happy Valley-Goose Bay. 28 cm of that fell yesterday and 42 cm of it fell today. The November single day record has fallen... now onto the 2 day record!
Good morning! It's Thursday November 19, 2020. It's going to be a chilly one across the Island, with highs near 0. Areas of flurries and snow squalls found along/near the West Coast. Scattered flurries elsewhere. Mix of sun + cloud and chilly for the Big Land.
Weather Alerts | Wind Warnings now issued for the West Coast, South Coast, Burin Pen., Avalon Pen., Bonavista Ben and along Bonavista and Notre Dame Bays. Gusts 80-110 possible in the warned areas of Monday. #nlwx https://weather.gc.ca/warnings/index_e.html?prov=nl
Futurecast will show the weather slowly improving for much of NL as our intense area of low pressure pulls away into the Labrador Sea tonight.
Happy Halloween!
Going to be a chilly one for the Trick-or-Treaters out there tonight... here are you feels like temps for this evening! Dress warmly!
Radar Update | Areas of snow, graupel or rain showers continue to affect the Avalon this afternoon. Over the next few hours they should ease off, setting us up for a nice, but chilly Halloween!
Time for the most controversial thing I say every fall... GRAUPEL is falling in the Metro this morning!
Monday is looking quite windy for many areas of the Island, particularly along south facing shorelines. If you have Halloween decorations up, trampolines out, or generally anything that can blow away Sunday is the day to haul that stuff inside or take it down.
The weather will be quiet and chilly for the next few days, including Halloween. The kids and adults are going to need all the layers Saturday evening. Once past that, we await the arrival of a potent system for Monday, which brings rain, wind and snow. Then... Tuesday night may see some fun and games on the Avalon. Details in tonight's forecast!
Saturday night!
Here's an early look at the Halloween forecast for Saturday night. The forecasts temps are here are 'feels like temps', which I think is more reflective on how to dress for the night. NL weather looks quiet, aside from a few flurries/showers on the Avalon/NE Coast.
Rodney measuring 14 cm in Gander!
The area of low pressure that is bringing the rain and snow to the Island today will track a little farther south than it looked like it would yesterday. That means that some areas of Central and western Newfoundland, especially from near Gander points west, will see more snow and less rain today. In fact, some areas may not see a change to rain at all. Snowfall amounts for some, particularly inland and over higher elevated terrain, could in the 10-20 cm range by the time the... snow ends this evening. Looks like mother nature is throwing us a little curveball today. I'll have a little video update for you in a bit! Eddie
