Mental health is something we all have in common as human beings. We all experience thoughts and emotions, some more intense than others. As society as grown and developed, we were often told how talking about our mental health is seen as a weakness or in some cases that people don’t actually think it exists Which has brought us here today to talk about it with #bellletstalk In sport culture, there is still a massive amount of stigma around mental health and talking about i...t; which has brought me to where I am today. I often reflect on my times as a figure skater where I experienced an enormous amount of performance anxiety. When I decided to quit skating, I thought my anxiety would stay at the rink where I left it. But it didn’t. As I moved through school and other sports, I noticed that my anxiety followed me and started to impact me in other areas of my life. I would experience panic attacks where I felt like I was going to die because I couldn’t breathe or move. I was scared of judgement and pressure so much so I couldn’t even get out of bed in the morning. I reached a point where I made this anxiety monster that was so big it was incredibly overwhelming to think about it. Where do I start? Is this forever? What am I doing to do? Sports were my outlet but I needed something more because it wasn’t enough. Thats when I decided I needed to talk someone. I needed the support. I needed to start to challenge and beat this monster that I had created. I need skills and strategies to learn to fight it. It was never easy and I worked hard to get where I am today. If I didn’t have this experience, I dont know if I would be here today doing what I do. As an athlete, never once did we talk about anxiety or depression. Never once did we as a team ask how each other was really doing and coping. Anxiety and Depression was like saying the word Voldemort you never said it and if you did people would shudder and not know what to say or tell its a phase you’ll get over it." This is why we need to change our conversations. This is how we support each other and move forward together. #bellletstalk #sports #YEGsports #eSports #sportspsychology

The 2 greatest lies our brains tell us when we are struggling with mental health are 1) "You are weak if you show emotion or ask for help...you should be able to fix this on your own"; and 2) "I don't want to burden anyone with my shit.". Stop it. These are not true and if people in your life have taught you this, I am sorry. These are OUR STORIES - Mat... If I didn't reach out for help when my hockey career ended...I'd still be in my parents basement being angry at the world. If I didn't talk to a therapist when I was lost and didn't know what to do with my life...I wouldn't have become a sports psychologist. If I tried to manage my panic attacks by myself from when I nearly died 8 years ago...I'd still be clutching my medication every night and I would have failed grad school. We are not meant to be perfect and we are not meant to tackle challenges alone...so break through the lies and reach out to just one person who you trust to listen to your story. It all starts with a simple conversation. #bellletstalk #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #sportperformance #sportspsychology #yegfitness #yegsmallbusiness #esports
