Sadly, this week we lost a cherished member of our fire family. Our sincere condolences and sympathies go out to Senior Firefighter Derek Sharman’s family, frie...nds and loved ones. He has left us too early. There will always be a piece of Derek in our fire family’s hearts. This is a tough issue for people to talk about. We need to be aware of the mental health issues that our members go through. If you are struggling, please reach out and know that we are always here for you. https://helpfirefighters.ca/support/calgary/ Thank you to everyone who has sent condolences, Derek will be missed by so many people. Please keep his family and loved ones in mind. Rest easy, brother.

Did you know? The breathing apparatus we wear is one of the most technologically advanced pieces of equipment at a fire scene, but the history of the SCBA in th...e fire service goes back almost 200 years! Today, we’ll talk about our self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). When you picture a firefighter, a few images probably come to mind: the iconic helmets, the big red trucks, the shiny yellow suits, or maybe even the air packs we carry with the Hollywood looking face masks! We’ve come a long way from the asbestos-covered iron cages firefighters wore in the early 1800s. In Calgary, we wear the MSA G1 SCBA. It’s a backpack-style SCBA with an air tank on the back. It is made of carbon-wrapped aluminum and it holds enough regular air to last between 30-45 minutes, depending on workload. The face mask is separate from the backpack and fits snugly to our heads with 4 adjustable straps. The visor on the front is a high-impact polycarbonate, designed to protect us from explosions and to resist the extreme temperatures inside a fire. Some of the additional technology on our SCBA includes a motion sensor alarm to indicate if we are injured or unconscious, a voice amplifier so we can communicate with each other, and a built-in thermal imaging camera to help us see in dark and smoky environments. It takes a lot of training and practice to be able to wear an SCBA properly and efficiently. SCBA are heavy, cumbersome and complex pieces of equipment where one missed buckle or broken part could mean serious injury. We need to know our equipment inside and out, and take good care of it; our lives and the lives of the people we are there to help depend on it! Breathing apparatus are one of our most used and most recognized tools. These complex and advanced pieces of equipment are one of the things that help us do our job safely, effectively, and efficiently. If you have a question about our SCBA, comment below and a firefighter will answer! #TheMoreYouKnow

***UPDATE*** The Moose Jaw Police Service attended to a fatal two vehicle collision near the north end of the city today. The driver of a pickup truck was prono...unced deceased and the other driver sustained minor injuries. We continue to investigate, but have now re-opened the roadway. The Moose Jaw Police Service is asking the public to avoid the area of Main Street North and the North Service Road as officers are currently investigating a serious collision. Traffic is being re-routed and an update will be provided when the roadway is re-opened.

Contrary to what you might think, Fires in New homes built with modern building materials are much more dangerous to firefighters than older homes with legacy... construction. Not only do these homes burn faster and collapse sooner, the building materials and the modern furnishings within the home produce much more toxic smoke and byproducts than ever before, and these products of combustion contain numerous cancer causing agents. #firefightercancerawarenessmonth #iaff #cancersucks #lodd #staysafe Saskatoon Fire Department Saskatchewan Professional Firefighters And Paramedics Association
