DID YOU KNOW... No matter our age, we all strive for and enjoy independence. Independence is instilled in us throughout life -- and the desire to be independent does not diminish with age. If anything, it becomes more important to seniors. Independence is one thing that allows us to feel in control of our lives when the other treasures of aging take their own course. At Senior House Share, independence is highly encouraged. We see how it fosters a sense of purpose and how i...t facilitates feelings of accomplishment! Our team looks after the big weekly cleaning tasks, personal laundry, linen changes, yard work and more, but each person here looks after their own dishes, light sweeping when needed, shopping and personal care throughout the week. Just the thought that someone is close at hand if needed is comfort enough for them to attempt almost anything! For many seniors, independence -- with a little help -- can be maintained! See more

DID YOU KNOW...Amazing accomplishments aren’t just for young people. Seniors across the globe are showing that they can do things that are just as incredible as people who are less than half their age. Some are breaking records or achieving lifelong dreams, and some are just spending time with family or helping to make their community a better place. Regardless of their goals, these seniors are amazing and deserve a round of applause! One such athlete is Johanna Quaas from G...ermany, who is recognized as the world’s oldest gymnast at age 86. Quaas, who is a retired P.E. teacher, only got her start in the sport at age 56. Quaas says that she doesn’t have any health worries at all, and hopes to still be competing at 90. Although she only practices gymnastics twice per week, she makes sure to do some sort of exercise for an hour each day. (photo from the Guinness Book of World Records) See more

DID YOU KNOW... Laughter really is the best medicine! Bear in mind, the research on laughter is not definitive. All we can say is it may have health benefits under certain conditions. While chortling may or may not be a boon for the body, it’s definitely healthful for our social life. A new trend called 'laughter therapy' is breaking ground. In laughter therapy, older adults gather and tell stories and jokes and do activities together, purposely generating a lighthearted atmosphere and comic relief among friendly peers. Participants say laughter therapy helps ward off depression, loneliness, and negativity. There is also some evidence that laughter has protective effects against heart disease by promoting blood circulation, reducing stress, and rebalancing blood pressure. So, have no shame and let that belly rumble!

DID YOU KNOW... Today is the second day of summer and it feels like it! Which brings me to the topic of HYDRATION! Over the age of 65 thirst diminishes and a person is not likely to drink without consciously thinking about it. Water is important to all bodily processes say medical experts. Water carries nutrients, hormones, and disease fighting cells and antibodies to and from body organs through the bloodstream. Without adequate water, there is stress on the cardiovascular ...system. Blood becomes thicker so the heart works harder and circulation is slowed. Many elderly people already have a sluggish circulation. When circulation is sluggish the brain doesn't receive enough oxygen resulting in headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and a loss of mental alertness. These symptoms could be diagnosed as other medical issues, when perhaps, all we need is MORE WATER! Bottoms up! See more
