People from many different East Asian backgrounds are celebrating the start of the Lunar New Year today. My best wishes to all who are celebrating. Canada has been greatly enriched by the contributions of Canadians of East Asian origin. Over the last year, as I have become increasingly engaged with the political questions raised by the actions of the Chinese government, I have also developed a deep interest in and appreciation for Chinese culture, traditions, philosophy, and... language. I would encourage all Canadians to engage with and learn more about these things. As the world becomes more and more connected, it is imperative that we can have dialogue with each other that reflects understanding and cultural appreciation. I have always been impressed and inspired by the passion and sacrifice of people in certain troubled political contexts who work and sacrifice for the advancement of freedom. I will be thinking in particular today of the many democracy activists and prisoners of conscience who will spend this important holiday behind bars. Happy New Year to all, wherever you are and however you are celebrating.

February 11th is the anniversary of Iran's "Islamic Revolution". Sadly, since then, the government of Iran has used the Iranian people and used religious justification for its own desire to extend power and violence throughout the region. The Iranian government has been a leading violator of international human rights, a key sponsor of terror around the globe, and a menace in the region. The consequences are numerous: thousands of executions, legally-enshrined gender and reli...gious discrimination, vast corruption, and poverty for many of Iran's people. This has significant implications for Canadian security and values. In 2013, the Parliament of Canada unanimously recognized that the Iranian Regime has committed crimes against humanity. In 2018, the House of Commons passed my motion to immediately list the IRGC (Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps) as a terrorist organization. Sadly, the Liberal Government has failed to act. Iranian officials responsible for the many crimes of the past 42 years must be held accountable for their actions. In spite of many challenges, the Iranian people remain steadfast in their pursuit of freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Their courage is a constant inspiration to me. So today I want to express my solidarity with the courageous people of Iran who have so often raised their voices seeking justice.
