Most folks will grab the trusty WD-40 to tackle a squeaky door, but that’s actually not the best choice for long-term lubrication. Stick with WD-40 for cleaning metal parts and protecting against rust, and use silicone spray here instead. The odor isn’t quite as strong, and your squeak won’t come back as quickly either. #mroddjobshandymanservices #youcandoit #langleybc

More Leverage Shove a screw driver under the hammer head to protect delicate surfaces, like cedar decking or any other finished surface. For a straight pull, size the screwdriver so the pivot point is as close to the nail as possible. The screwdriver also gives the hammer claw better leverage, so you can often rock the hammer directly back on its head rather than sideways. But not always. Use this straight pull only on nails that come out fairly easily or that aren't driven deeply. Otherwise you could break a wooden-handled hammer. Although you can yank a lot harder on hammers with a fiberglass or steel handle, you'll find it's a lot easier to use a sideways pull. #hammerhacks #knowyouknow #mroddjobshandymanservices

Door knob divot You should have replaced that door stop long ago and now you've got a nice round divot in the drywall from the door knob. Grab the patching compound and fill it? Nope, too much work. Buy an inexpensive stick-on bumper and slap it over the crater. It's the best fix for the job. #knowyouknow #homerepairhacks #mroddjobshandymanservices

Clean a dirty bathroom exhaust fan grille Cleaning an unsightly bathroom exhaust fan grille is easier than you think. Most of them pull straight down from the ceiling and detach by squeezing two spring clips. Remove yours and spray it with a household cleaner/degreaser. Then rinse it with hot water. Wipe off any remaining dirt with a soft cloth. Compress the spring clips and pop it back in place. #springcleaning #knowyouknow #mroddjobshandymanservices

Note Breaker Number On Outlet Cover Save time and frustration with this useful tip. Once you’ve determined which circuit that a switch or outlet belongs to, jot down the breaker number on the inside of the outlet cover or light switch plate. This way the next time you need to work on that switch or receptacle, you know which breaker to flip and just a single trip down to the electric panel is all that’s needed. #knowyouknow #mroddjobshandymanservices #timesaver #makessense

Unclog a Toilet With Dish Soap If the toilet plunger doesn’t seem to be doing the trick, try this solution before you reach for the phone. Squirt about 1/2 cup of liquid soap in and let it sit for a while. The liquid soap reduces friction and will often allow the contents of the bowl to slide on through. #nowyouknow #mroddjobshandymanservices

Install a Detachable Toilet Seat It seems like no matter how hard you try, you can never get the hinges on the toilet seat clean. There’s always a bit of cleaning solution that seeps underneath and creeps out later. Installing a detachable toilet seat solves the problem. This Bemis brand seat is easy to remove by just twisting two hinge caps about a quarter of a turn. Then you have easy access to clean under the hinges. Installation is straightforward and only requires a wrench. #mroddjobshandymanservices #toiletseat

Things Homeowners Need to Do Once a Month (but probably don’t) One thing is clean your garbage disposal. The best way to clean out your garbage disposal is with baking soda and white vinegar. Take half a cup of baking soda and a cup of white wine vinegar, and put both down the sink. After a few minutes, pour some boiling hot water down, too. Next, fill the drain with some ice cubes, and add a cup of salt, which will help to remove debris. Finally, add lemon halves to the disposal and keep both the water running and the garbage disposal on. #homeownertips #mroddjobshandymanservices #cleangarbagedisposal

Things You Should Never Do With Power Strips Our entire lives run on electricity, and if we’re being honest here, no one’s house has enough power outlets to keep everything running and charged. That’s why we rely so heavily on power strips to turn one plug into six or more, stretching the capabilities of our home’s electrical system. But, there are a few rules you’re probably breaking when it comes to power strip use. Here is something you should never do with power strips. Never plug hairdryers, curling irons, straighteners and other beauty tools as these all create heat and draw quite a bit of amperage to generate that heat. Power strips aren’t designed to generate that kind of consistent high amperage, so these beauty tools should be plugged into a GFCI-protected outlet. #nowyouknow #mroddjobshandymanservices

How to Clean Television Screens The principles of cleaning television screens are mostly the same as cleaning a laptop or phone screen. Use a soft cloth and dampen it if you’ve got more than just dust or fingerprints to clean up. But keep in mind that because television screens are often so much larger than other kinds of screens, they can be much more fragile. Try not to apply too much pressure to the screen as you wipe it down so that you don’t scratch or otherwise damage i...t. Electronics stores will sometimes sell television cleaning kits that include a microfiber cloth and a specialized screen-cleaning solution. Most likely, though, that solution will be little more than distilled or deionized water, as cleaning solutions containing additives and chemicals can do major damage to screens. If you want to purchase the kit, go right ahead. Just know that you can probably make a very similar cleaning solution for cheaper at home. #cleantv #cleanelectronics #mroddjobshandymanservices

How to Remove Eye Hooks with a Drill Eye hooks are great little fasteners with a wide variety of applications. But removing them can be a bit of a pain, especially if you try to do it by hand. Instead of putting your thumbs through a world of hurt, try this simple trick for eye hook removal: Put the long end of an Allen wrench into the chuck of a drill and then use the hook end to spin the eye hook out. It’s as easy as that! Mr Odd Jobs Handyman Services let us do the work so you don’t have to #handyman #handytips #mroddjobshandymanservices

Toilet When it comes to your home’s toilet, it can be hard to say how long it will last. However, there are some things that can tell you when it needs to be replaced. If you’re rebuilding the toilet guts regularly, it has recurring clogs or a crack in the porcelain, it may be time for a new toilet. #handyman #goodtoknow #mroddjobshandymanservices

Guiding Saw Cuts Speed squares are a quick saw guide for cutting 45- and 90-degree angles. The plastic squares are thicker than most metal ones, making them a good fence for the shoe of a circular saw to ride along.

Cut Beside (Not On) the Marked Cutting Line. Many don’t know that when you cut on the marked line you will shorten your measurement by 1/16 in. Keep in mind this elementary tip when cutting boards to length or width: Measure, mark a cutting line, then cut just beside the cutting line on the waste end of the board so your board doesn’t wind up short. Finish-sand your board to the exact length needed. Mr Odd Jobs Handyman Services let us do the work so you don’t have to.

Painting advice: To avoid lap marks, roll the full height of the wall and keep a wet edge Lap marks are those ugly stripes caused by uneven layers of paint buildup. They occur when you roll over paint that’s already partly dry. (In warm, dry conditions, latex paint can begin to stiffen in less than a minute!) The key to avoiding lap marks when doing DIY wall painting is to maintain a wet edge, so each stroke of your roller overlaps the previous stroke before the paint can ...begin to dry. Here’s some painting tips: To maintain a wet edge, start near a corner and run the roller up and down the full height of the wall, moving over slightly with each stroke. Move backward where necessary to even out thick spots or runs. Don’t let the roller become nearly dry; reload it often so that it’s always at least half loaded. Keep the open side of the roller frame facing the area that’s already painted. That puts less pressure on the open side of the roller, so you’re less likely to leave paint ridges when doing DIY wall painting.
