Artwork by @morning.star.designs Shared by the university, the following is a message from Patrick Small Legs-Nagge, Special Advisor to the President on Aboriginal Affairs: Today, May 5, is Red Dress Day: National Day of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People. On this day, we wear red to draw attention to the more than 1,000 missing and murdered indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people in Canada. ... Red Dress Day was borne out of the ongoing art project called The REDress Project by Jaime Black, a Metis multidisciplinary artist based in Winnipeg. The red dresses act as a visual reminder of those who are missing or who have been murdered. I invite you to check out the short docu-drama 'Protect Our Future Daughters' that educates viewers about the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) of Canada and The REDress Project: https://www.nfb.ca/film/protect-our-future-daughters/ You can also find information about, and visuals from, the powerful Walking With our Sisters exhibit that was shown at the MSVU Art Gallery in 2017 at: https://www.msvuart.ca/exhibition/walking-with-our-sisters/ Finally, I encourage you to wear red today to raise awareness about this important issue in our country and beyond.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR FOOD BANK RECIPIENTS: Due to the rising cases of COVID-19 in Halifax, we are now offering curb-side pickup only. This helps to reduce contact between staff, volunteers, and recipients. Contactless curb-side pickup will be available Monday 9am-12pm, Tuesday 12pm-4pm and Wednesday 4pm-8pm. Please consider bringing reusable bags to transport your order, as we are running low on boxes. If there is an emergency in which you require delivery, please contact Mary-Beth at [email protected] or 902-318-5378. Thank you and stay safe! Due to COVID-19 and rising safety concerns, we are short-staffed and working with limited resources and volunteers. Responses to inquiries may be delayed. Please check our website at https://mountstudents.ca/services/foodbank/ as it is updated regularly as the situation changes.

A note from Mary-Beth, our Food Bank Manager: I am so excited to share that the Athletics & Recreation Department at MSVU is throwing a Diaper Drive for the MSVU Students' Union Food Bank! I cannot express how grateful we are, as the demand for these products is constant. It's so important that we as individuals and as a society rethink our preconceived notions of food banks and food insecurity, especially pertaining to students and universities. Food insecurity comes in ma...ny different forms. Food insecurity includes diapers and baby wipes. It includes formula to feed your infant. It includes those little apple sauce pouches every toddler goes nuts for. Food insecurity can and will affect every aspect of your life. Students, as well, come in many different forms. Students are single moms trying to make the best life for their children. Students are young families who just moved across Canada with no relatives for childcare support. Students are young parents. Students are mothers who are just learning English, taking night classes and job searching all day. These are students. The norm we have placed on students that food insecurity is to be expected, and can be combatted with instant ramen and part-time jobs is not only dated and unrealistic, but is a dangerous mindset to fall into. Initiatives like this, from the wonderful people at MSVU Athletics & Rec, are what make the difference. This is what combatting food insecurity looks like. This is what helping students looks like. This is what community support looks like. I urge you to donate if you can, or reach out to local organizations to see how you can help in whatever way possible. Please feel free to share! If you have any questions about this Diaper Drive, or want to work with the MSVU SU Food bank, don't hesitate to reach out at my email, [email protected] See more
