Join presenter Professor Susan Chiblow for her talk "Anishinaabek Kweok N’bi G’giikendaaswinmin (Our Water Knowledge)" Register at https://realmuskoka.com/webinars... Anishinaabek have lived governing themselves based on their worldview and governance system in the Great Lakes territory since they were placed on Turtle Island by the Creator. The kendaaswin (knowledge) obtained from living in this territory are rooted in laws, cultural and spiritual beliefs, and management practices. Colonization has had devastating effects on these systems including ignoring Anishinaabek kweok (women) knowledge in water decision making regimes. Anishinaabek kweok have a unique relationship to and responsibility for N’bi (water) which can inform water governance.

Here is some interesting Muskoka history that you may not have known courtesy of our archive team at Muskoka Discovery Centre! The first non-Indigenous people to arrive in Muskoka, usually arrived from the south. They travelled by train to Bell Ewart, just south of today’s city of Barrie, then by steamship to Orillia, then by rowboat or steamer to Washago. To travel the last 13 kilometers from Washago to Gravenhust (and Lake Muskoka) they either walked or took a stagecoach. ... In conjunction with the MacKenzie Hotel at Severn Bridge, proprietor Charles McKenzie constructed a huge livery capable of housing seventy-five teams of horses, notably those of Harvie and Millard Stage Line of Orillia one of the most extensive lines of stagecoaches in the province 100 teams of horses. In winter they operated daily from Gravenhurst to Orillia. In summer they travelled from Washago, transporting freight and passengers to connect with the steamships at Gravenhurst Wharf. With arrival of the railroad in 1875 there was stiff competition. To prosper they extended their service to the north. #muskoka #gravenhurst #history #stagecoach

Wanda III Awaiting Restorations in 1993! When Wanda III was brought by truck from Lake of Bays in 1993, she was placed on a cradle for major restoration work. This picture shows her sitting parallel to Highway 169 in Gravenhurst. ... Although the docks in the bay are different now, you can see the Steamship Office in the background. Wanda III is currently undergoing restorations again and will be returning to service soon as an electrified vessel!

"Muskoka Bay in Winter" - a great photo from our archive! At the height of the steamship era in Muskoka, most of the ships were ‘wintered’ in Gravenhurst. The ships in this photo are in the same bay as RMS Segwun and Wenonah II are docked, but closer to the highway. ... The ships of yesteryear were stored at their company headquarters where there was maintenance done on them and they were in a safe location where they could be monitored.

Here is one of the very unique items from our archives department - a vintage Coleman Kerosene Steam Iron! One thing to note is that anyone using this iron would have to be especially careful because of a design flaw. The handle is made of wood and would get hot easily and possibly catch fire during use. A high price to pay for portability! #muskokahistory #musuem #muskoka #gravenhurst #archives #history #steampower
