Today we’re sharing this striking wall hanging by Musqueam weaver, Vivian Campbell from the MOA Collections. Campbell was part of the Native Youth Program at MO...A in high school and in 1997, she joined the weaving school at Musqueam, as part of the contemporary resurgence of this ancient art form. This piece uses key weaving techniques such as Salish "V"s, twining and tabby weave, while incorporating contemporary design elements and colours. "I think the revival of the weaving is important because it really opens up a whole new door to what our people are all about. It is great that Salish weaving has come back because it is something that enriches our entire community."" Vivian Campbell Wall Hanging (detail). [MOA Collections Nbz854]. By Vivian Campbell. 2001. On Saturday, October 17, 2020, Musqueam Chief Wayne Sparrow sent a letter to Chief Mike Sack in support of Sipekne’katik First Nation's constitutionally-protected right to fish. Musqueam strongly denounces the acts of violence and complete disregard of the law by the non-Indigenous commercial fishers involved. It is disheartening that Sipekne’katik and other Mi’kmaq fishers continue to struggle to safely and fully implement their treaty right to earn a moderate livelihood fr...om fishing. This situation has been reported as a dispute between Mi’kmaq and non-Indigenous fishers. However, it is Musqueam’s view that this situation has developed as a result of the Crown’s ongoing failure to recognize and implement Mi’kmaq commercial fishing rights as confirmed in the 1999 SCC decision. We believe that the DFO’s prolonged failure to act has set the table for the violent events of this past week.
