Myth or History 08.11.2020

Today the world lost a cultural icon, one that defined multiple generations of game shows. Many evenings have been spent sitting around the TV playing along for so many families. Born in Sudbury, Ontario to a Ukrainian immigrant and a French-Canadian mother, he grew to find out quickly that he loved the world of broadcasting. He went to work for the CBC whew he hosted a slew of various shows, from a music program to a quiz show and all kinds in between. In 1973 he moved to t...he USA and hosted a lot of different shows until 1984 when a revival of Jeapardy brought him in a host. And that is how we will remember him. Asking questions with that favorite uncle, that awesome moustache and his clear, conscise words. Rest in Peace Alex Trebek. You will be sorely missed. You created July 22, 1940 - November 8, 2020

Excavations Launched at the Tomb of Duke Jing of Qi and his 600 Sacrificial Horses In 1964, a surprising discovery was made in China a tomb containing the remains of hundreds of horses, arranged neatly in rows. Such a complex burial and large sacrifice clearly indicated that the tomb belonged to a person who held a high place in society. It was soon found that the tomb belonged to Duke Jing of Qi, and that the horse remains were, sadly, a sacrifice made in his honor. Now ex...Continue reading

By 1787, the union between the states was unraveling. To save the young nation, delegates from 12 states met in Philadelphia and, with George Washington presiding, created a new form of government. If James Madison was the Constitution’s chief architect, as some textbooks say, then Washington was its general contractor in that he, more than anyone, got the work done. Rising above conflicts between individual states, Washington created an atmosphere that allowed convention mem...bers to reach the compromises necessary to create a bold, new government. The new nation was hanging on by a thread with a weak Articles of Confederation and growing conflicts between the states. Without resolution on these issues the new nation would certainly be in peril. "I do not conceive that we can exist long as a nation without... a power which will pervade the whole union." - George Washington, 1786 As Washington sat above this group, observing the chaos, there were five other players that had key roles in the creation of the Constitution. Each of these men brought specific ideas about the role of government in the new nation. After the Revolutionary War ended, George Washington was finally able to resume the life he had missed, but a trip west that began as a business venture would give birth to an event that changed American history. Voters might vote for an individual, or they might vote for a political party. This is because different countries use different voting systems. ... Elections keep a democratic country functioning, as they give people the right to select their own government. But never forget that no matter the party or person you support, at the end of the day you are one people. Unity should be paramount, not division. This is truly not a myth at all. This is history.. your history. Dont let people remember hatred and violence. But let them remember compassion and understanding - Graig

Today November 2 Marie-Antoinette, the queen consort of King Louis XVI of France (177493), was born Let them eat cake is the most famous quote attributed to Marie-Antoinette, the queen of France during the French Revolution. As the story goes, it was the queen’s response upon being told that her starving peasant subjects had no bread. Because cake is more expensive than bread, the anecdote has been cited as an example of Marie-Antoinette’s obliviousness to the conditions ...Continue reading

Halloween is a holiday celebrated each year on October 31, and Halloween 2020 will occur on Saturday, October 31. The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Hall...oween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats. Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago, mostly in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31 they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort during the long, dark winter. To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter. So we dont make large bonfires anymore, but I am sure you have lit one or two fires inside your pumpkins marking your homes and sidewalks. So what do you think? Is this just a little Halloween trick? Is this a bonafide Myth? Or is this treat just history? -Graig
