An abundance of spices were traded on these strategically placed routes. Spices were used for flavoring and preserving food, as well as used in religious ceremonies, for me...dicinal purposes, and to help hide odors. Spices were so prized at the time that Roman soldiers were often paid in salt, giving us the word salary and the common phrase, worth his salt.
