Many businesses in BC are tourist dependent. With COVID-19 lockdowns and border restrictions, businesses like sports fishing, which attracts domestic, US, and international visitors, have been struggling. Without rapid testing and delayed vaccinations, our country has not been able to transition toward re-opening yet. The points I raised in February 2021 are still relevant today three months later when other countries are boasting about vacation travel plans. Canadians deserve better.

The last time I was in Ottawa, I rose in the House to present two petitions on behalf of independent travel advisors in my constituency. The first petition calls upon the House to provide sector-specific funding for independent travel advisers and to extend qualifications of the RRRF in urban areas to include sole proprietors. The second petition asks to ensure that financial assistance to airlines and travel companies is conditional on the protection of travel advisers' commissions and that clawed-back commissions be repaid to travel advisers in a timely manner. On this day in 1885, Métis leader, Louis Riel, was executed. His contributions to defending Métis rights in Canada are significant. We remember this day in the spirit of truth and reconciliation.

Erin O’Toole responds to updated COVID-19 pandemic projections November 19, 2020 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE... OTTAWA, ON The Hon. Erin O’Toole, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, today released a statement following a briefing on the government’s projected COVID-19 numbers: Today I met with Justin Trudeau and was briefed on the modelling of new cases of COVID-19 that the federal government expects in Canada in the coming weeks. What struck me was that 11 months after news about the spread of COVID-19 emerged, after thousands of lives and millions of jobs have been lost, and hundreds of billions of dollars has been added to the national debt, we as a country are worse off than we were at the start of the pandemic. We are in this position because the government failed to give Canadians the ability to rapidly and frequently test for COVID-19; has failed to tell Canadians how they plan to deliver a vaccine; and failed to be transparent with Canadians about what COVID-19 related information they are using to make decisions that affect lives and jobs. Canadians need to see a real plan to test, trace, and isolate those who are infected. Shutting down the entire country again is simply not a solution. Today, I am calling on Justin Trudeau to finally do what he should have done months ago to protect Canadians’ lives and their jobs. He must immediately: Deploy widespread access to rapid testing for all Canadians, including providing access to at-home tests, to stop the spread of the virus while allowing workers to go to their jobs and for families to be safely reunited; Develop more effective and targeted measures to protect, isolate, and support those infected with COVID-19; Explain to Canadians how, when, and where they will be able to get a vaccine when it becomes available; Provide rapid COVID-19 tests for all travellers entering Canada; and Share with Canadians more timely information about the locations and sources of community spread. Some regions are now seeing rapidly rising numbers, but Canadians have yet to see a detailed plan on testing and vaccine deployment. The Liberal government is revealing the risks of the second wave but have not learned the lessons from the first. Canadians can count on me to ensure we push for a smarter response.

Canada is a great country built on communities that have always had each other’s backs. That is the Canada that Trudeau left out of his agenda. ~ Erin O'Toole, Leader of Canada's Conservatives and of the Official Opposition.

Most Canadians are struggling. If our country is to move forward into recovery mode, it's important Canada has leaders who can inspire greater patriotism, an overcoming spirit and have enough optimism and discipline to focus and work hard against all odds. I'm proud to have a leader who isn't afraid of hard work or being real. He doesn't try cutting corners or make excuses. He gets things done. Erin O'Toole is a leader who can get us through the wilderness of this pandemic er...a to the other side. He's a leader Canada needs right now. Thank you Erin for your online tour with British Columbia last week. You gave us hope. We look forward to your next visit! https://www.facebook.com//a.356488031109/3483983868360296/

Mental health challenges have increased for women during the pandemic with anxieties related to financial instability, the added responsibiltiies of caregiving to elders and homeschooling children, while trying to make ends meet. Relational conflicts are also on the rise and has caused some women to leave longterm relationships and find themselves in hidden homelessness with precarious work. Domestic violence is more difficult to detect because perpetrators are controlling the women's access to communication. In today's meeting, I asked questions about how women are accessing mental health support and how agencies like the YWCA are helping women in domestically violent relationships to find effective exit strategies in the midst of complicated challenges caused by the pandemic. The panellist's answers raise actionable points.

According to the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses (CFIB), female-owned businesses are more likely to be smaller and newer businesses. Many couldn't access COVID-19 business assistance programs like CEBA and subsidies for wage and rent because they didn't qualify. Seasonal businesses are also falling through the cracks. While there was no specific data provided in today's meeting on how many businesses have already closed shop, there are anywhere from 150, 000 to... 220, 000 businesses that feel they are on their way to closing shop. 56% are uncertain about their survival because of the second wave. The initial rental assistance program (CECRA) was ineffective where landlords opted out. 62% of female owned businesses feel the new rental assistance program could significantly increase their odds of staying open. The recommendation from CFIB is that CEBA, CEWS and CECRA need to be broadened to ensure small business owners don't fall through the crack as they have been so far. While support for retooling and moving businesses online are helpful, immediate support is urgent. Time is of the essence. I will continue to bring my voice to the table on behalf of businesses, of which some of the most vulnerable are women business owners.
