Fun Fact Friday: Neon Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Neon') sports heart-shaped leaves in a brilliant, electrifying green. Best of all, this charming houseplant is just as tough, easy to grow and carefree as all other pothos plants. These bright plants perk up rooms and offices with their chartreuse yellow-green leaves. While the heart-shaped leaves can grow as large as 20 inches long, indoors the leaves are usually smaller, around five inches long. They can tolerate diverse gro...wing conditions. Best is a spot out of direct sun, in filtered light. They even grow well under fluorescent lights. Avoid hot, direct afternoon sun and keep the plant away from drafts. Neon pothos are vigorous growers and do well in hanging baskets or anyplace where their trailing vines can fall freely. Because they tolerate low light, Neon pothos plants can grow in a bathroom or office. See more

Fun Fact Friday: Eucalyptus is a genus of over seven hundred species of flowering trees, shrubs or mallees in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae. Along with other genera in the tribe Eucalypteae, they are commonly known as gums or eucalypts. Plants in the genus Eucalyptus have bark that is either smooth, fibrous, hard or stringy, leaves with oil glands, and sepals and petals that are fused to form a "cap" or operculum over the stamens. The fruit is a woody capsule commonly referre...d to as a "gumnut". Most species of Eucalyptus are native to Australia, and every state and territory has representative species. About three-quarters of Australian forests are eucalypt forests. Wildfire is a feature of the Australian landscape and many eucalypt species are adapted to fire, and resprout after fire or have seeds which survive fire. A few species are native to islands north of Australia and a smaller number are only found outside the continent. Eucalypts have been grown in plantations in many other countries because they are fast growing and have valuable timber, or can be used for pulpwood, for honey production or essential oils. See more

Fun Fact Friday: Pilea peperomioides, more commonly known as Chinese money plant, pancake plant, UFO plant, lefse plant, missionary plant,' "Bender Plant"'or mirror grass, is a species of flowering plant in the nettle family Urticaceae, native to Yunnan and Sichuan provinces in southern China. George Forrest was the first westerner to collect Pilea peperomioides, in 1906 and again in 1910, in the Cang Mountain range in Yunnan Province. In 1945, the species was found by Norw...egian missionary Agnar Espegren in Yunnan Province when he was fleeing from Hunan Province. Espegren took cuttings with him back to Norway, by way of India, in 1946 and from there it was spread throughout Scandinavia. Pilea peperomioides is an example of a plant which has been spread amongst amateur gardeners via cuttings, without being well-known to western botanists. They did not know its true classification until the 1980s. The first known published image appeared in the Kew magazine in 1984. See more

Prepare Hydrangeas for Winter! Some hydrangeas bloom on the new growth that comes up each year. These include quick fire, limelight, Annabelle and Incrediball. These varieties are fine to prune in late fall.Some Hydrangeas’ spring flowers bloom from the previous year’s buds. These types should not be pruned or they will not bloom the following year. Here are some tips to properly prepare your plants for the harsh winter conditions. 1.Prune away the dead branches. It's impo...rtant that you only cut away the dead branches and leave the healthy ones, or you will have pruned its buds on the varieties that form buds on old growth. If you do that, the plant won't bloom again in the spring. Most of the dead branches can be found at the base of the plant 2. Build a frame around your hydrangea plant with stakes of wood. Wrap chicken wire around the frame that you built. It should encompass the entire plant to form a cage. Fill the cage with mulch, pine needles or leaves. The insulation should be at least 6 inches (15 centimeters) deep, so it will adequately protect the plant from winter conditions. Some botanists feel that oak leaves are the best at insulating the plant throughout the winter because they don't settle as quickly as other plants. If you have an oak tree, make sure to store the leaves for use as insulation for your hydrangea plant. See more

Wintering Evergreens (& Junipers/Cedars) Thorough watering of the soil around evergreens in late autumn, just before freeze-up, will enable the roots of the evergreen trees to take up water for as long as the soil isn’t completely frozen. The soil freezes gradually, so the lower levels will not be frozen for many weeks and during mild winters there may be some unfrozen soil around some of the deepest roots. An ample supply of water in the soil is vital to the winter survival... of evergreen trees. Tender evergreens that are not totally hardy in our region can be further protected by adding a heavy layer of mulch under the trees to reduce the depth of frost in the soil. Evergreens transpire moisture through their needles; this process is slowed dramatically in winter because of the waxy coating on these needles, the reduction in the size of the leaf openings used for transpiration, and because of the reduced rate of photosynthesis. However, all evergreens will lose some moisture through their leaves during the winter. Cedars and upright junipers can be tied so that individual stems do not bend down when snow accumulates on the trees. Using a soft but sturdy material to tie the trees into tight cones will enable them to withstand heavy snow loads with little ill effect. If you have any evergreens in pots, remove them from their containers and plant them in a location where they are sheltered from wind, protected from winter sun and get good snow cover. They can be planted into containers again in the spring. Giving evergreen trees and shrubs some attention in the late fall will mean they will come through the winter well!
