An update from our in-hospital retail services. Where there's a will, there's a way! Our traditional Gift Shop is in a poor location for sales right now. So we got creative! Already sales have picked up.

When I was much younger, my family always went to the Labour Day Parade. Soon, however, the theme became a contentious one with labourers walking by in the black and white stripe prisoner garb, dragging 50gal (or so I was told) balls by their ankles. It became all about a lack of positive workplace culture, labour laws and health and safety benefits, and a load of tzarist bosses. How wonderful that workplaces are now more comfortable, although for still too many, the struggl...e continues. But here's the thing: workers have found their voices and nothing does it better than a national pandemic to spur them on! BGH workers prevailed and will keep on doing so. Their families who also work in our community are doing the same, because our workers know intuitively: when one of us needs help, there is someone else who will offer it. It's the way it works in a country like ours. We are eternally grateful to you all! See more

Happiest of Birthdays to Violet, who turns 90 today. Violet has been volunteering with the BGHA for 24 years and we are very thankful for every moment of it.

One of the services we can’t wait to get back to when it is safe to do so. The library Cart service is one of the oldest services provided by the BGH Auxiliary. Over the years, the volunteers have distributed magazines and books to thousands of patients, visitors and family members. Patient floors and waiting rooms are updated every week by volunteers who offer a smile and conversation to everyone they meet. The service is so appreciated by everyone!

Please join us in welcoming Kristen as our new Convenor of our Family Care Room! We are thrilled to have her working in this important role. Night or day, the BGH Auxiliary provides two rooms for those with loved ones receiving treatment that are in desperate need of a place to stay. Located within Quinte 6, the patient’s family and friends are given access to a quiet place to sleep, eat, meet and look after themselves while their loved ones are being looked after by staff. Amenities are available to help them unwind during their stressful time, such as; therapeutic activities, beverages, television and access to a telephone. These rooms are not available for frivolous use or extended stays, but to make it easier for the patient’s family to be with their loved one during their time of need.

A big congratulations to Nancy M, one of our office volunteers who will also be taking on another role as our Helping Hands newsletter convenor, a brand new role. We can’t wait to see the work you will do!

BGHA convenors handle the scheduling for their volunteers and look after inventory/other needs for their coverage area. Most often they too take on "floor hours"; they enjoy active friendships with other volunteers, patients and staff. This image features 5 of our convenors: Cathy W., Convenor, "ICU Ambassadors"... Sharon M., Convenor - "Maternity" Leona G., Convenor - "Therapy Dogs" Pat P., Convenor - "Emergency Ambassadors" Violet W., Convenor - "Information 3" See more

Another "Blast From The Past" to reflect on past volunteer work, as we anxiously await our return to the hospital when COVID restrictions allow for it. This week, we're taking a trip to 1938! Tag Days were started in 1938, the year the Belleville General Hospital Auxiliary (formally called the Women’s Hospital Auxiliary) was formed. In that year the women of the auxiliary sold enough tags to produce a profit of $411.29. Proceeds from the Tag Day were $442.83 less expenditure...s of $31.54; an amazing fund raiser for only one day of sales, especially in 1938. The photo is from the mid 50’s and they grossed a generous amount of $616.00. This is one of the many fundraisers the BGHA has organized in order to purchase new equipment for the Belleville General Hospital.

Please Join Us In Welcoming Ashley King, Our New Communications Convenor! Ashley comes to us with a strong 3-year diploma in Graphic Design from St. Lawrence College (Kingston). This program meets and exceeds our needs for this position. She has already been working to upgrade and develop posts to our Facebook page which needed a much more professional presence. Ashley came to us through the Volunteer & Information Quinte web site, looking for a great volunteer role in her free time. She was recently accepted into Loyalist College's Office Admin program, with a specialty in Health Sciences. How synergistic is that?!?
