The Nipawin Fire Department was honoured to recognize three of its members earlier this week for a milestone in contributing to their community. Mark Botherel (left), Kevin Lockwood (right) and Bob Hosaluk (missing) were presented their Saskatchewan Protective Service awards for 25 years of exemplary fire service.

Today's Fire Prevention Week Tip: Always keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Leave the pan covered until it’s cool. Never put water on a cooking fire!

During Fire Prevention Week, we learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. Every year's theme is unique, this year it is 'Fire Safety in the Kitchen'. Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. It killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.
