Effective March 17, 2020, NLCAHR's director and staff will work from home, in compliance with government and health system recommendations for social distancing to manage risk during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. While our researchers will continue to work on reports for our provincial healthcare system under the Contextualized Health Research Synthesis Program, our Research Exchange Group meetings will be suspended for the next month. Andre Picard discusses new research on the need for increased social spending to lower the rising demand for "sickness" spending in Canada and offers this parable to distil the underpinning logic: "One day, a group sitting by a river sees a baby in the water. One of them dives in to save her. Soon, more babies appear, and the bystanders all jump in to save the children. But one person has the presence of mind to go upstream and figure out how to stop the babies from falling into the river in the first place. In our public policies we need more of that upstream thinking, beginning with a sounder redistribution of health and sickness care spending." https://www.theglobeandmail.com//new-stu/article37679063/
