Ever wonder what those little white tags are and why they have numbers written on them? Those are artifact tags! Museums use them to identify artifacts. The numbers written on the tags are called accession or artifact numbers. WE ARE HIRING Business Development Officer Intern, Exhibitions and Archives The Northern Ontario Railroad Museum and Heritage Centre (NORMHC) is seeking a qualified candidate to assume the role of Business Development Intern, Exhibitions and Archives. The position is a full-time, one-year contract with an hourly rate of $17.95/ hour. ... The purpose of the internship is to provide direct support to the museum’s Operations Manager and Board of Directors regarding the development of new exhibitions, digitalization of materials and the development of new travelling exhibitions for Northern Ontario Railroad Museum and Heritage Centre. The successful candidate will: Liaise with groups and organizations regarding new and existing opportunities for the display and exhibition of artifacts; Assist with inquiries regarding historical and archival reference materials; Investigate and explore opportunities to cross market and collaborate with like-minded organizations; Participate in the research and development of new content for onsite, online and travelling exhibitions; Investigate funding opportunities to enhance museum offerings and implement new exhibitions and programs; Present new and existing exhibits to the public and special delegations visiting NORMHC; Assist with the preparation of marketing materials for new and existing displays for local and out-of-region visitors; Assist with the development and implementation of new software to ensure the museum is adhering to industry standards regarding its database management; Review and make recommendations regarding the museum’s artefact/reference material loan policies; Represent the museum at local and regional Arts and Culture / Tourism / Heritage forums to network with colleagues and explore new opportunities for NORMHC; and Other relevant duties assigned To be eligible, the successful candidate must be: University and college graduates who have graduated within the last three years from an accredited college or university with a focus in applied museum studies, research, libraries and archives, history or social studies. The position must provide the intern with first time employment in their field of study. Candidates are only eligible to participate in the internship program one time. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in which more than one million Canadians and Newfoundlanders served in uniform. Over 45,000 were killed and an additional 55,000 were wounded. To acknowledge the anniversary, the Northern Ontario Railroad Museum and Heritage Centre (NORMHC) will be commencing the restoration of a 1942 Canadian Military Pattern Vehicle (CMPV). Once restored, the vehicle will be put on display at the museum and will be a...vailable for Canada Day celebrations, parades and Remembrance Day activities. Over 500,000 Canadian Military Pattern vehicles were produced during World War II and were instrumental in helping to mobilize allied forces. This three-ton truck was one of 201,000 produced specifically by the General Motors plant in Oshawa, Ontario. According to the museum, the addition of the truck will complement a number of existing artifacts and programming initiatives. This year many Remembrance Day services will also be held virtually due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Some area Legion branches will also be hosting their own services at their branch.
