Now that school is finally over and Ive finished the CMTO exams to become an RMT (hopefully Ill be offering human massage by September), Ill be making a trip back to Sault Ste. Marie! A few good tips!

With show season in full swing and the weather being so hot, heres a little trick to tell if your horse is dehydrated. Pinch their skin and see how long it takes to go back to normal, it should only take a second or two. If it stays tented the horse is a bit dehydrated.

With summer officially here Id like to take a moment to talk about sun protection! Most horses wont burn, but often horses with white on them have delicate pink skin that will burn. Just like humans, sun burns predispose horses to skin cancer. I choose to find a fly mask with UV protection, but you can also apply sunscreen to the delicate spots (avoiding the eyes). How do you guys protect from the sun?

In school we covered safe trailering practises. One thing that really surprised me was what halter you should use. Nylon halters are very hard to break. If the horse panics, theyre likely to get caught up and hurt themselves. If you have a leather halter, or a breakaway halter like Rory is modelling in this picture, the leather will break if the horse has a major meltdown. This can be safer in the end.

Very important! In Ontario we have a 2200 hour equine massage course, although it is unregulated and anyone can practice, regardless of training or experience! Be careful who you trust your horse with!

Looking to host a fun clinic this summer? Try a stretching clinic or the new remedial exercise clinic! In the stretching clinic, we go over general equine anatomy before learning neck, forelimb, spine, and back stretches. Participants learn how to safely and properly stretch horses and when to performing these stretches. Starting this year Im offering a remedial exercise clinic, which goes over everything in the stretching clinic plus strengthening exercises the help targe...t specific areas of weakness/concern. It is best to have 2 people to 1 horse so theres a person to hold the horse and one to stretch, then you switch. So if you are unable to bring a horse, we m...ay be able to pair you with one. Please note that we will be picking up the horses feet many times throughout the day. If your horse struggles with having their feet worked with, they may not enjoy this clinic.
