Our last day of Arts At The Farm, presented by EPCOR Canada, was another wonderful day filled with arts, culture, and agriculture! Today we welcomed the Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women, Leela Sharon Aheer and many others to tour the Urban Farm and take part in the activities. We had Jill Thomson Artwork displaying her art in the Red Shed Gallery, and artist Richard Dixon sharing his talent and Plein Air painting. Auctioneer Ed Pietsch lead another wo...rkshop this morning, and so did Enmy Moghrabi who used recycled materials to create mini-planters and coasters and encourage more functional art at home. Maryann Borch of Good Note Community Farm lead a workshop on willow weaving, with a group bending their branches to create soap dishes. Our performances throughout the day were engaging and drew a crowd - Moza Africa shared their traditional music of central Mozambique, while Sticks and Stone Percussion took us on a musical journey through Classic Rock, Disney songs, folk music, and other favourites. Thank you from the Northlands Edmonton team to all who attended, shared their talents, volunteered, or worked the inaugural event. And our thanks to EPCOR, Alberta Culture, and the Alberta government for their support in helping us bring this event to life!

Moza Africa performing at Arts At The Farm, presented by EPCOR, are showcasing traditional music of central Mozambique. Perpetua Alfazema and her children, Thumaine, Perpetua, and Sara garden at the Urban Farm with Global Gardeners with the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers. Through their songs, they keep alive their connection to Mozambique and the Chisena language; they celebrate their appreciation for Canada; and they raise funds for youth programs in rural Mozambique.

What an incredible first day of Arts At The Farm, presented by EPCOR Canada! We are grateful to EPCOR, Alberta Culture and the Alberta Government for helping us put on a weekend filled with arts, culture, and agriculture! Today we had an auctioneering workshop hosted by longtime Northlands volunteer Ed Pietsch as well as a Dream Catcher workshop with Nadine Chalifoux. We welcomed the Urban Sketchers Edmonton, showcased Jill Thomson Artwork in the Red Shed Gallery, and witness...ed Ashleigh Taillefe painting live on site throughout the day. Gardeners gave tours of the Urban Farm, and we watched a wonderful Chinese Cultural Performance by a group of our Urban Farm gardeners. To cap off the day, Lodestar Theatre Company, featuring actors and puppets, told the tale of A Midsummer Nights Dream! Hockey is BACK in YEG! Hockey has been a big part of the Edmontonian lifestyle for as long as we can remember. Did you know in 1979 the oldest building on the Northlands grounds was the Edmonton Gardens, dated 1913. In the winter it was fully booked for hockey from 6am to midnight everyday but Christmas and New Years. Remember that time bees tried to get on a ride at K-Days 2019 for free? Patty, our beekeeper and Agriculture Education Specialist, came to the rescue and captured the swarm and brought them into the hive at our Urban Farm. To celebrate National Pollinator Week here are 5 things to know if you come across a swarms of bees. Bees are usual gentle and rarely dangerous when they swarm if they are left undisturbed... They are only hanging out temporarily and will usually move on their own Swarming is a natural way for a hive to reproduce, this means one hive has two queen bees and they need to find a new place to live and work Give them space, let them do their thing In the event that a honey bee swarm lands on our property call 311 to inform the City or contact the Edmonton District Beekeepers Association and they will send out a beekeeper to remove the swarm at no cost.
