ATTACK GRUBS NOW You can’t see them, but from late July through early October, grubs are vigorously munching on the roots of your grass. These are the larval stage of various kinds of beetles. The most common is probably the June bug. Females lay eggs in the grass in summer. They pick lawns that are watered and growing well rather than dried out or dormant laws, The eggs hatch late in July and the grubs start eating grass roots. In October, they burrow down to about 2 fe...et and stay there for the winter. When the soil warms up to about 20 degrees, they come up to feed again. But they don’t do much damage in spring. Grass is growing fast, and grubs become adults late in May. Unless your lawn in inundated with Grubs, a spring program to eliminate them is rarely effective. The BEST time is in August or September. Grubs do more damage then because the grass is growling slower, and they are eating longer. Lawn Grubs, often called White Grubs, are the immature form of different Scarab Beetles, such as Japanese Beetles, June "bugs" (beetles) or the European Chafers. These white, C-shaped creatures have soft bodies with legs near the head. They feed on grass roots (and organic matter in the soil), causing sections of grass in the lawn to die. Grubs eventually turn into adult Beetles and emerge from soil to mate and lay eggs, which hatch into more Grubs. Most Scarab Beetles have a one-year life cycle; June Beetles have a three-year cycle. Timing varies by Beetle species and region, but generally adults emerge from soil, mate, and lay eggs over the course of two to three weeks in early to midsummer. Depending on soil moisture and temperature, eggs hatch about two weeks after being laid, in mid-to late summer. The new generation of root-munching pests begins feasting immediately after hatching. Peak feeding occurs in early fall. Typically, the pests operate a few inches below the soil surface, but burrow deeper (up to 8 inches in northernmost areas) before winter arrives.
