Painter Dmitry Yuzefovich has won Second Place in Marketer Magazine Art Competition! Selected from 60 talented artists, Yuzefovich’s oil paintings create visualizations of spaces and objects in which they combine to form a puzzle of personal and universal memories. Born in 1974 in Kyiv, Ukraine, he lived and studied in Israel. Yuzefovich attended the Bezalel, Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, Israel where he received a BFA in 2000 and an MFA in 2005. He moved to Canada ...with his family in 2015. In Red Umbrella, a quiet urgency broods in this narrative still-life. His skilled tromp l'oeil technique delivers a tension between past memory and present activity: the well-worn black hat, the open umbrella, and the single string of keys are hung together as though they have been prepared for a quick getaway. In his oil paintings, a language is created based on the connection between memory fragments and the possibility of their implementation in the present. Yuzefovich has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions. His paintings have been collected in Israel, Canada, the US, England, and Europe. Silent Spaces by Adam Cohen, Acrylic on Canvas, 24 24 inches Swirling passages and drips of yellow, periwinkle, moss green and white coalesce at a central point in this action painting by Adam Cohen. Cohen intersects the language of heroic Abstract Expressionism with narrative to re-invent the experience of action painting in a contemporary context. Here Cohen revels in the emerging colours of spring. Attend the Giller Prize Gala tonight, digitally! Tune in tonight, 9 pm: https://bit.ly/3pedKYD // Shani Mootoo's fifth novel, Polar Vortex, is shortlisted for this year’s Scotiabank Giller Prize. Oeno Gallery will host Mootoo's portion of the digital broadcast, and we'd love you to join us. The multidisciplinary artist's stunning exhibition of photographs, Portraits of Re-Semblance, is on now at Oeno Gallery until November 10. When the Scotiabank Giller Prize couldn’t hold it...s gala in its usual format, they decided to broadcast live from different locations with the short-listed authors. It quickly became obvious that Oeno Gallery with her exhibition as a backdrop was an elegant broadcast location for Mootoo’s portion. The ceremony will be broadcast commercial free on CBC tonight, Monday November 9th at 9 pm. Madeleine Thien describes Polar Vortex as an intimate new novel that suspends us in the vortex between acts of betrayal and acts of love. It is a powerfully unsettling work from a brilliant artist. A meditation on the complexities of identity and desire, the novel is set in Prince Edward County. When we started planning this exhibition we were focussed more on the powerful narrative qualities of the photographs, says Carlyn Moulton, curator of Oeno Gallery. Then when Polar Vortex made the short list, the coincidence of timing seemed uncanny. We are really honoured to be a part of the Giller awards ceremony and to share this with Shani. Finger’s crossed that our county internet speed is up to it! That’s what is keeping me awake at night. Author, filmmaker, painter and photographer, Shani Mootoo earned a BFA from the University of Western Ontario, and an MA in English from the University of Guelph. Her first novel was longlisted for the Booker Man Prize. Mootoo's paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions locally and internationally, most notably at the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Queen’s Museum in NYC, the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, and at the Venice Biennale. Her videos include English Lesson, Wild Woman in The Woods and Her Sweetness Lingers, and have been screened in film and video festivals and art exhibitions locally and internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. Shani Mootoo was born in Ireland and raised in Trinidad. For the past several years, she has resided in Prince Edward County. You are invited to come by the gallery to see this stunning new exhibition, and to tune into this evening to watch the Scotiabank Giller Gala: https://bit.ly/3pedKYD Portraits of Re-semblance - Mootoo's provocative exhibition of photographic images continues through November 10th at Oeno Gallery.

Incredible view of "The Hunt" by artist Ken Hall installed in Nova Scotia. Pursued by a pack of five welded steel wolves, the plate steel cut-out of an alert buck uses negative space to create a window through which we can regain our lost perspective. Exploring the intersection of nature and culture, "The Hunt" examines the discord between our primal instincts and social expectations.

Enjoy this video tour of our latest exhibition, Portraits of Re-semblance: Works by Peter Hoffer and Shani Mootoo. Portraiture is never the innocent capturing of its subject that it often purports itself to be. Sometimes it is a tool used for political gain, to represent status or wealth, or a vehicle through which we attempt to hold memory still. Some cultures believed that photographic portraiture was magic and had the ability to steal souls as it captured likenesses. I...n all cases portraiture is a re-presentation of its subject through the eyes of its beholder: The artist-creator asserts their vision into the assemblage of their subject through acts of inclusion and exclusion, memory and emotion. What is captured in the end is a re-semblance of the ‘real’. Portraits of Re-semblance: Works by Peter Hoffer and Shani Mootoo is at Oeno Gallery until November 1st 2020. Please call us to arrange your appointment today: 613-393-2216 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2Y9aVIcoPo&feature=emb_logo
