Goodbye 2020 This year has been such a mish mash of extremes. Extreme tragedies to extreme human kindness We have received so much goodness from our community, we feel so blessed. We have also lost so many beings this year, grieving has been part of our daily experience. ... I really didn't think I would be functional if I lost Sun, and here I am functioning (sort of) everyday. Watching everyone around us function (sort of) despite many global plagues hanging over us, it's been quite phenomenal. If I ever doubted the resilience of the human race this year has forever convinced me that we have such a huge capacity. Everyday humans are awe inspiring. Then again, 4 of the people we lost, we lost to suicide. As someone who has several mental health issues, I know for a fact that the kind of pain that is possible in humans can be insurmountable. 2020, has instilled in us a healthy dose of truth serum "we humans are not in control, anything is possible, it could go either way". As 2020 closes, we are letting go of some more of our pretenses and defenses in the face of our vulnerability. We are moving into 2021 with our arms open to our frailties, which helps us also embrace our strength. We are vulnerable and we are also strong. What did you learn this year? Xoxox P.s. Hate Crimes Legislation is Impotent. We can't think of a more obvious example of a hate crime then the hanging of Nooses. When someone confesses to something, it's pretty clear who did it...they said they did it. ... So why not call it what it so obviously is? Because, the way our hate crimes legislation is set up, it is basically useless. Canadian law states that the police have to get the permission of the Attorney General to lay a hate crimes charge. For the 70,000+ hate crimes that happen every year in Canada.....less then 1 percent of these are prosecuted as hate crimes....the Attorney General rarely grants consent. And what can we do when the Attorney General makes a unilateral decision not to pursue something as a hate crime? Nothing. There is no appeal for this process and so the dude in the AG's role ( it's always been a dude) gets to make the decision with no accountability. The police know the AG rarely grants leave to lay hate crimes charges so most times they don't even pursue it. Even in the most obvious of cases. If hanging a Noose for black people to find or hear about, isn't a hate crime then what is? If hate crimes charges aren't laid, then what is the detterent to committing hate crimes? Now let's see hate crimes are increasing in Canada, not decreasing. Gee, do you think there's a connection? Nah, that's too obvious. Clearly when it comes to the legal protection of marginalized groups, the obvious is irrelevant.

We found out last week that the perpetrator had confessed. We didn't say anything then because we wanted to respect the processing time of the Black worker who had initially found the Nooses and then was also the person who found out who the perpetrator was... Yup you heard that correct. It was NOT the police investigation that "uncovered" the perpetrator it was the Victim of the Crime. I can't say more right now because again we want to respect the person who has not only be...en the direct target of this violence but has had to put up with months of harrassment and then have to be the one to solve the case as well. In the end the perpetrator confessed. We will give you more information on this soon but for now the Toronto Police response to this has been disgusting. To say the least. From a completely inefficient investigation, statements full of platitudes, taking full credit for a charge coming from a confession, to this latest display of cowardly responses to Anti-Black Hate: laying a charge of "mischief" on this reprehensible act of hatred. It's appalling. We have been relentless as a community to see justice here because we care for the construction workers who have to live through this violence and we expect better working conditions in 2020. The Ministry of Labour has done nothing, the police has done very little and the Attorney General has made it clear that hate crimes will not be dealt with seriously. We all need a safe secure home and community in which to live with dignity. Unfortunately, over 220,000 people in Canada are homeless and that number is just increasing.... Canada has signed on to several International Covenants that acknowledge housing as essential to human security. Canadian and Ontario Human Rights legislation assert housing as a fundamental right. Our law states that housing is a promise, guaranteed and protected. Because of COVID restrictions many people have lost their incomes or partial incomes and could not sustain their lives. Right here in the East End hundreds of people are suffering. Our neighbors in Crescent Town need our solidarity right now. There are 75+ families who are on the verge of loosing their homes. One of the most diverse, vibrant and contributing neighborhoods. Crescent Town with over 10,000 residents boasts over 100 languages spoken and neighbors who represent the whole world.
