Speed Skating, to a certain extent, is a very close knit family. We share in the wins and losses for skaters, we watch as young skaters start to express themselves as young teenagers and then adults, we see the skill progression and speeds dynamically increase over years. We are proud of our children and friends. We volunteer at the clubs, at events the small club meet or, if we are lucky the national stage. All the while becoming part of the bigger skating family over th...e years. It has, therefore, become a rite of passage for many skaters that they have found one familiar face on the ice over the years. To greet them on the starting line, to encourage them to keep skating to the bitter end, or to be handed some form of penalty as they raced their hearts out. Jacky Shoebridge has always been there advocating on behalf of every skater knowing them by name, knowing them by every action of their arms and legs their quintessential mannerism (although at times not knowing what they looked like with their helmets off). Passionate and stern in equal approach. Quick to offer advice that might provide a valuable lesson for the next race, or next year. Respected by her peers. And, yet has left many a Coach with a stern look from the centre of the ice. Ontario has been fortunate to have been guided by Jacky on the Board, on Technical Committees, Officiating at countless meets and as a friendly warm coach at the Cambridge Club. We would like to express our grateful thanks, for our teacher as she moves to Alberta to retire and spend more time with her family. For those of us still lucky enough to perhaps travel out to the Calgary Oval, we will be fortunate to have a friendly embrace and a debate over Speed Skating while sharing a warm cup of tea. Thank you Jacky and Paul for your contributions to the Ontario Speed Skating community and we wish you the best in your future endeavours!
