In Remembrance Provincial Constable John R. Gregovski - January 4, 1989. (Niagara Falls) #HeroesInLife "Big John" Gregovski, a Hungarian speaking son of immigrants to south-western Ontario, was born on September 7, 1942. He was an avid fan of John Wayne. He joined the OPP on October 7, 1963 where he worked at the St. Catharines Detachment until that office closed in 1985. At that time he moved to the Niagara Falls Detachment.... John was a highly popular officer with both the public and his fellow workers. In addition to the Big John moniker, they variously called him Grotty, Grog or Fish after one of his favourite outdoor activities. Another activity he enjoyed was bow hunting where he met police officers from the American side of the Niagara River. During his quarter century police career he received numerous cards of appreciation from people that he helped on the highway. "Highway" is the operative word because he was a traffic officer and policed the busy highways in the St. Catharines and Niagara areas. Later in his career he became very interested in truck and their maintenance and safe operation. Frequently he worked in conjunction with Ministry of Transport officers in enforcement work. Constable Gregovski was on the night shift on January 4, 1989 when he went to assist a disabled van on the Queen Elizabeth Way at the base of the Garden City Skyway Bridge. A wrecker had been called and the two men were seated in the cruiser, which had all its roof lights activated. At about two-thirty a.m. a westbound tractor trailer came up in the right-hand land of the three-lane roadway, struck the cruiser, pushed it into the disabled van and sent both vehicles over two hundred feet up the Skyway Bridge. Both the officer and the thirty-six year old passenger sitting in the police car died instantly. The truck driver was later charged with criminal negligence causing death. John was survived by his wife and two children.

In Remembrance Provincial Constable Duncan T. McAleese - January 23, 1980. (Simcoe) #HeroesInLife Duncan McAleese was born on September 20, 1946. In November 1972 he joined the Ontario Provincial Police serving initially at Milton and then at Acton where, in 1975, in commemoration of twenty-five years of O.P.P. policing, the community named all the O.P.P. officers at Acton, including Duncan, Citizens of the Year.... Duncan moved to Simcoe Detachment in 1976. On January 23, 1980, Constable McAleese was to meet with a man who had information about some drug activity. Constable McAleese knew the man as he had arrested him for impaired driving almost one year previously. The informant didn’t show up at the restaurant at the scheduled time, but when Constable McAleese was preparing to leave, he saw the man’s truck and approached it and spoke to him. The informant then fired nine shots at Constable McAleese, hitting him the head, chest and stomach, and drove away, running over the fallen officer and dragging him for a short distance before fleeing. Duncan McAleese was pronounced dead at the hospital. A memorial plaque was placed at the Simcoe Detachment in honour of Constable Duncan McAleese. Robert Bruce Mitchell had been convicted of impaired driving. He was arrested four hours later after smashing the truck into a hydro pole. He was charged with first degree murder. Mitchell was found not guilty by reason of insanity in court in Newmarket in 1981. He was ordered held at the Penetanguishene Mental Health Centre. His wife and three children survived Duncan McAleese.

In Remembrance Provincial Constable Richard M. Verdecchia - January 2, 1981. (Huntsville) #HeroesInLife For complete story, please refer to link http://ow.ly/2gPE50CNvGr... Rick Verdecchia was born on May 20, 1945 in Sault Ste. Marie. After the death of his father, Rick left high school in the eleventh grade to help support his family. He later finished high school via correspondence. Rick worked for more than five years at Algoma Steel and in his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, played baseball and bowling. When the family was settled financially, Rick announced that he wanted a job where he could help people and decided to join the OPP. On January 5, 1970, Rick began his policing career with the OPP and was posted to the Hearst Detachment. Shortly after he arrived in Hearst, he met his future wife. They soon married and had a daughter in 1980. Rick and his family relocated to Huntsville with plans to build their dream house with a view of the lake on the outskirts of town. The eleven-year police veteran enjoyed a late New Year’s Day dinner with his family before leaving for work at about eleven-thirty on January 1, 1981. On January 1, 1981 two young men, stole weapons from the home of friends known to one of the men. They cut across Highway 17 to Highway 11 traveling southbound towards a service station in Burks Falls. When they did not have the money to pay for the gasoline, the oldest of the two men fatally shot the attendant and left him by the pumps.

In Remembrance Provincial Constable Robert D. Edington - January 21, 1938. (Warren) #HeroesInLife Bob Edington had something about him that made the young immigrant from Gorebridge in Scotland, well suited to law enforcement. During his all to brief career he served with two police services and two correctional agencies.... His birth date is not certain but is thought to be January 15, 1907. At the young age of nineteen, Edington was accepted by the RCMP in March 1926 and underwent recruit training at Depot Division, Regina, Saskatchewan. When his original enlistment was expired on March 4, 1929, he then served with the federal force in E Division, British Columbia. Constable Edington joined the OPP on July 1, 1937 and was posted in Sudbury for a month before being transferred down Highway 17 to Warren, between Sudbury and North Bay. On January 8, 1938, Edington was working on an investigation in Verner, Ontario when he began to have car problems. He stopped at a restaurant to have dinner and had difficulty with his vehicle when he left to resume his work. The motor finally turned over before stalling once more just a short way down the road from the restaurant. At about six forty-five p.m., Edington stepped out to try to determine the cause of the stall and moved right into the path of an oncoming truck that was headed east Highway 17 on his way home to North Bay. The vehicle's fender struck the officer and his head hit the hood of the police car with great force. PC Edington lay in a coma for a while at the Brebeuf Hospital in Sturgeon Falls but later became conscious and recognized visitors despite severe facial injuries. Over the next two-week period the thirty-one year old officer failed to show signs of improvement and he died on January 21. The driver of the truck was found to be blameless in the accident and no charges were laid. PC Robert D. Edington was survived by his mother and two sisters.

In Remembrance Detective Constable Keith A. Badger - December 9, 1998. #HeroesInLife Keith Badger was born on October 5, 1956. He went to school in Owen Sound at West Hill Secondary School. Keith decided quite early that he wanted to go into policing when he worked at his parents gas station pumping gas as he met members of the OPP while servicing cruisers, as well as the cars of off duty officers.... Detective Constable Badger joined the OPP on September 10, 1979 and worked first in Downsview. While Keith did a much-appreciated imitation of the characters in the TV detective show Barney Miller to amuse colleagues, he also began to gain notice in real criminal work. He received commendation from Commissioner O'Grady for intervention in a criminal offence in Mississauga while off duty. He received approbation for his above-average knowledge and skill in criminal work. In May of 1998 he became a detective constable and went to the Caledon Crime Unit. He became the lead officer on the Robbery Response Team and the group achieved a one hundred percent clearance rate. On December 9, 1998 D/Constable Badger had every reason to feel satisfied. He had just concluded a lengthy murder investigation and made an arrest. At this point the highly successful career of the nineteen-year veteran came to a close. He was involved in a motor vehicle collision on a side road west of Toronto while driving an unmarked OPP vehicle. He died at the scene of the accident. Keith Badger was survived by his wife.

In Remembrance Provincial Constable Bradford E. Browne - November 13, 1968. #HeroesInLife Brad Browne hailed from Picton and his goal was to join the O.P.P. First he moved north to find a job to support himself. He came to Sudbury and worked for the International Nickel Company as a miner.... By the time he was twenty-one years old, Brad was a long ways towards joining his chosen profession. He was accepted as a cadet with the O.P.P. at the Sudbury Detachment on April 8, 1968. His hard work as a cadet paid off in six weeks when he was able to call his parents and announce he had been appointed probationary constable. On the night of November 13, 1968, just ten days into his probation, Constable Browne went on patrol on Highway 69 south with a constable who had four and one half years experience. The senior officer was the driver of the cruiser. The officers where returning north when they encountered a transport with a load of steel experiencing load problems. The load of steel shifted and the transport literally crushed the O.P.P. vehicle, dragging it along the road for some distance before breaking free and rolling over. Passenger Constable Browne was killed and a man from Richmond Hill, a passenger in the truck also died at the scene. The driver of the truck and the constable driving the vehicle were critically injured. Mr. and Mrs. Browne requested a picture of their son in uniform so that it could be displayed in the family church. Today a portrait of Brad is on view in the Sudbury detachment.

In Remembrance Provincial Constable John C.A. Verral - October 8, 1971. #HeroesInLife Two years after he became an Ontario Provincial Police officer, Constable Verral was chosen to become a member of the Golden Helmets Precision Motorcycle Team.... On October 8, 1971 the team was putting on a show at the Norfolk County Fair in Simcoe, Ontario. The problems started when the second last ride was performed. Constable Verral was having difficulty maintaining speed, control and balance of the bike. In the last crowd-pleasing event, called The Charge or Finale Formation two teams of machines in parallel lines ride towards each other with flashing lights and sirens in full operation. As they approach each other they pass through and continue to the opposite end of the show track. John tragically died in this accident. John Verral was survived by his wife, two daughters and one son. Read full story on OPPA website Honour Roll here: https://oppa-stage.reasononeinc.com//Honor-Rol/VERRAL-John

In Remembrance Provincial Constable John G. Ross - October 7, 1984. #HeroesInLife Born on September 3, 1928, (John) Jack Ross was raised on the family farm in Oxford County. As a student at Woodstock Collegiate, he was interested in sports. Unfortunately, his high school education came to an end with the death of his father, necessitating for Jack to work the farm.... Jack made a career choice in 1962, selling the farm and joining the Ontario Provincial Police. Initially, Jack was posted at Essex but later was fortunate to be transferred to his home turf of Woodstock. On October 7, 1984, Jack and another officer were shot by one of two men who had earlier killed one man and a police officer, and had also been involved in a hostage taking. Although they were wearing body armour when the suspect fired at them, each was hit in an unprotected area. Unfortunately, Jack's wounds were fatal. Commemorative tributes, including the Jack Ross Sports Bursary for students at Woodstock Collegiate and the naming of Jack Ross Drive in his memory, are constant reminders of the community's respect for Jack. Jack was survived by his wife and five children.
