What’s your child’s favorite song to sing with you? The simple act of singing together is an opportunity to learn. Singing sparks your child’s imagination, rhyt...hm and builds confidence. You can encourage singing in the car, while playing at home and during bath time. For more great ways to learn together, visit https://www.saskatchewan.ca//prek-12-/early-years-learning.

Happy Occupational Therapy Month in Canada! This is our month to increase awareness and celebrate the profession! To start....let's talk about that fancy word......occupation. Why are we called "occupational" therapists? Well occupation basically refers to all the things that "occupy" your day. Occupational therapists see daily occupations as tasks and activities that need to do (self-care), want to do (leisure), and have to do (productivity, jobs) each day. The term and profession primarily emerged out of the World Wars. Physicians and Nurses found that wounded soldiers who were prescribed just right things to do....just right occupations....recovered better and faster in both their physical health and mental health. This applied to soldiers living with shell shock (PTSD) and soldiers recovering from physical injuries. Fast forward almost 100 years..and we have a really cool profession that believes that your daily occupations bring you health and well-being. Interested in learning more.... Later today, we will also be announcing our Cup OT'ea Sessions for 2020. What are the Cup OT'ea sesssions? Each Tuesday, join us for a virtual cup of tea and a conversation about hot topics in occupational therapy. What topics would you like to discuss? Comment below...as I am truly curious.

EASY COLOR SORTING // Save all the toilet paper tubes! They make for the perfect drop spot for color sorting. Baby girl enjoyed sorting and dropping the... pom poms for 5 minutes before trying (and succeeding ) to pull the tubes off! This is totally normal, and a reminder that young toddlers concentrating on an activity like this even for just 5 minutes is a success! That’s why we keep the set ups simple and easy to put back together! Swipe to see more including a funny video of a toddler being a toddler! More details on how I set this up below . Any questions at all? DM me or drop it in the comment section! - (1) Cut toilet paper tubes in half (or leave them whole for double the filling!). (2) Paint tubes acrylic paint, tempera paint sticks, spray paint, whatever you have on hand! (3) Glue painted tubes down to a piece of cardboard. I used hot glue since it dries super fast. (4) For the older kids grab a tong and set aside pom poms, or bottle caps, or erasers, anything smallish that will fit inside. (5) And watch those fine motor skills at work! See more

Day 2: Tips for Helping Children Wear Face Masks. There are many noticeable changes as we adjust to life with COVID-19. One such change is increased use of fac...e masks or facial coverings. Wearing a mask is important and will help us stop the spread of COVID-19. It is important to note that masks are only for children over two years of age. Your child may not want to wear a mask and/or have a hard time keeping it one. Mask wearing can be especially challenging for children living with sensory processing differences. Such children may be more sensitive to the way the mask feels on their face, head, and ears. Some children may feel panicked when a mask is put on them. Other kids won't like the way the mask looks on themselves or others and might feel scared. And still other children are resistant simply because it is different and doing something that is different is hard for them. Let's strive to be patient and kind as we help all children, families and community members adjust to this change. The following tips offer some strategies and supports for children in our community. If following review of the tips, you have additional ideas that have worked for you, please comment and share. Your ideas may just be the answer for another child and family. In the post, I mention some additional resources: Social Stories: Younger Children: https://tinyurl.com/yb9dchp6 Older Children: https://www.autism.org///2020/04/I-can-wear-a-mask-1-1.pdf Simple Video for Young Children: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLO1GNXKmNE Putting a Mask on My Toys: https://tinyurl.com/yy8euss3

For many families, the coming school year will be different than any other. No matter what type of learning environment children may experience, there will be a...n adjustment to new expectations, routines and procedures. It is normal for children (and adults) to have difficulty adjusting in the first few weeks of school each year, but this year, fears of getting sick, school safety protocols for COVID-19, and simply the fact that it has been almost 6 months since children have been in school, the transition may make the transition even more difficult. Over the next few weeks, we are striving to provide information and practical strategies to help your family prepare for an unconventional school year. See more
