There is a new documentary podcast being launched later this month. It is called Invisible Institutions. The podcasts look at the past and present institutions for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our country. These podcasts were created by Megan Linton with support from People First of Canada and Inclusion Canada. They bring a new light to how institutions are being used today and how they affect people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. You can listen to the trailers at the link below.
People First of Canada is saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Barb Fowke on January 27. Barb was a long-time member of People First and a strong advocate for the rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Barb was a gentle and loving person with a great outlook on life. She was a very positive person and a good friend. She always looked for the best in people and usually found it. Barb had the heart of a poet and would often share her poems and positive messages to brighten other people’s days. Our condolences and sympathies go out to Barb’s family and friends. She will be missed.

The Supreme Court ruled this week on the Slatter case. The ruling states that the testimony of a person with an intellectual disability in sexual assault cases should be treated like anyone else’s testimony. The myths and stereotypes about people with intellectual disabilities should not be considered. (Warning this case is about sexual assault).
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
