Welcome back to a new term! UVic Rocketry is still active and busy with projects. Are you a CSC or SENG student looking to boost your portfolio with relevant... skills for co-ops and your career? We're starting a multifaceted new project management app development project and need lots of help. We keep projects social and rewarding through collaborative work sessions and biweekly coding workshops on our team Discord server, and regular meetings over Zoom. Message us if you'd like to get involved! See more

Hi space friends! Tonight is our last open house of the semester!! To celebrate another wonderful term we are closing out with THE ULTIMATE Q&A! So bring all o...f those questions you've asking yourself all semester, and we'll find you an answer. After this week we'll be taking a short break before starting our summer series of Open House, so keep your eyes peeled for that! As per our regular schedule, the Zoom meeting will begin at 7:30pm PST with some general science discussion. The presentation starts at 7:45 and runs until around 8:45. The Q&A runs until 9pm after the presentation. We hope to see you there! The Zoom link is the same as the one we used last term. Feel free to contact [email protected] if you need more info. In the 1970s, kids who were asked to "draw a scientist" drew a woman less than 1% of the time. By 2016, it was up to 34%, according to a study from 2018. #WomenInScience #ScienceMagArchives

Hello everyone! For this week’s online open house, we are very excited to have Cam Wipper, a Remote Observer of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) joinin...g us tomorrow night to give a virtual tour of the observatory and talk about its operations, as well as his story of how he ended up working on Mauna Kea! Please see the poster for more details. If time permits, there will also be a brief history of Mauna Kea Astronomy from a geological and human perspective. In addition, at the end of the presentation, Cam will provide information to the YouTube recording of the full Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) presentation, should any attendees at our open house like to view the whole 1+ hour talk (where a discussion of Hawaii’s geology and how/why astronomy on Mauna Kea is good will be included). As per our regular schedule, the Zoom meeting will begin at 7:30pm PST with some general science discussion and the presentation starting at 7:45 and running until around 8:45. The Q&A runs until 9pm after the presentation. We hope to see you there! Here is the link to join the Zoom meeting: https://uvic.zoom.us/j/93596786035... Testing when campus is closed means our team members have to get creative with making cheap at-home testing equipment. This is our recovery subsystem's "Blast-...o-Bowl 550", a DIY vacuum chamber made with a mixing bowl, silicone baking sheet for sealing, and some simple tubes and fittings! It can hold a maximum vacuum pressure of about -10 psi. This year we want to characterize the pressure output of our system used to puncture our drogue ejection CO2 canisters at apogee to ensure that our system will still work at 30,000 ft. This vacuum chamber allows us to simulate the 4.4 psi pressure conditions at apogee, and is cheap enough that we feel comfortable with detonating tiny explosions under it without incurring major financial losses if it gets damaged during testing.
