This is the last week to order your BBQ packs to help support the Portage Rotary Club Just in time for camping and the long weekend! Funds we raise with Rotary stay in the community and go towards local projects and initiatives. Our current project is the revitalization of the Duck Pond at Island Park. ... The last day to get orders in is May 9th!!

Today we were joined by Caileigh Morrison. Caileigh has been running Portage's only homeless shelter since July 2020, first as the Executive Director of Rest-A-Bit and now as the Portage Community Shelter Coordinator in partnership with PCRC. Before the pandemic, she worked in student housing in Winnipeg. Caileigh holds a Master's degree in Canadian Studies and sees a direct link between colonization and homelessness. Working on practical solutions to homelessness that recognize the inherent dignity and worth of unhoused people is an expression of her commitment to reconciliation and her personal values. Caileigh shared with us that the majority of funding for the shelter is from the Federal body of Reaching Home, an initiative that deals with homelessness.

The Portage Rotary Club has still been working throughout the pandemic.

Our first BBQ Pack order went in to Homestead Co-op yesterday and will be ready to go out later this week/early next week. (To those that have ordered for this week, we will give you a call when your order is ready). We will be placing orders every Monday until May 10th with our next order going in April 19th. Last year we started a designated fund with the Community Foundation. Here is Mandy Dubois- Executive Director with the Community Foundation accepting this years contribution from the Rotary Club President Nathan Peto.

We heard the sirens and music 2 blocks away and saw the flashing lights coming.., then we waited outside for our chance to see Santa! What a wonderful way to get into the Holiday spirit!! Thank you Portage la Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce, City of Portage la Prairie - Municipal Government, Portage La Prairie Rotary Club, Portage la Prairie Fire Department and the Portage RCMP for putting this together in 2 days to bring Christmas cheer to the City of Portage!

What do we do when we run low on vegetables in our 4 day vegetable sale?? We call for more and hope we have enough volunteers on hand to ease the load of moving them off the trailer into our semi trailers!! Running low on vegetables is never a good thing, but that means we are having a successful sale!!

GREAT start to day one of our annual Rotary Vegetable Sale! We’ve had some learning curves having one way traffic and taking orders from the car, but we’re doing our best and sold a whole bunch of vegetables today! . Thanks for all of the support Portage! We’ll be back at it bright and early tomorrow (Thursday) 9am to 7pm, Friday 9am-7pm and Saturday 12noon to 5pm!!

This concludes our last day working on the Duck Pond revitalization for the year! We are going to let the dirt settle, and leaves fall while we rest and restore to get back at it again next year! We got lots done this year, but we still have a long way to go! This afternoon at our lunch meeting we heard from Richard Bee, Head Librarian with the Portage la Prairie Regional Library. Richard was born and raised on a farm near Brookdale, MB. Later, he went to pursue his undergraduate BA degree at Brandon University, where he also first began his library career working at the John E Robbins Library. Richard spoke to our club about the growth of the library, how they have been impacted by the pandemic- from losing staff to reducing hours and also about what he expects to see in the future. OUR VEGGIE SALE IS NEXT WEEK!!! September 30th to October 3rd. We do have a couple of changes to this year, but most things are staying the same! We have decided it’s best if we take only pre-orders of $100 and up (due to limited storage space). We are asking all customers to come in off of Saskatchewan Avenue and exit out the back lane onto 18th to keep traffic flow going one way keeping it easier and safe. The one big change for us this year with Covid-19 is that we as...k you to stay in your vehicle. We will have a volunteer in the parking lot directing you where to park, we will take your order, collect your order and bring it right to your car and collect payment there as well (cash, debit and cheque’s accepted). Our location is the same as last year at the corner of Saskatchewan Avenue and 18th NW in that vacant parking lot. Great morning at the Duck Pond today! We had lots of volunteers from our club (plus friends of Rotary; Brenda, Leroy, Jeff and Luc) and with the guidance of Proctor Designs and help from EF Moon we scraped one full side of the bank and cleaned it up with fresh soil, plus added landscape cloth and river rock up at the top of the waterfall! Things are really starting to come together and take shape now! If you haven’t been by to check on the progress, we recommend it. Our speaker today was born and bred in Manitoba. Caitlyn Giercke is a new business owner who opened her own pharmacy, amid the pandemic, after working at another local pharmacy for the last 15 years. She is learning to navigate the new normal in our community while growing her business and balancing work life with her home life. Caitlin opened Pharmasave 3 months ago and spoke about how easy it is to transfer your prescriptions over (just need the name of the other pharmacy, ...your name and birthday) and they do the rest for you. She spoke of upcoming flu season and the importance of a flu shot and also about how excited she is for the community support in her new business. Thank you for coming to speak to us today Caitlyn!
