Big thank you to Ally and Kyle Connor for entrusting us in training your special boy Samson! What a great dog!

You're probably sick and tired of hearing about the dogs...but guess what, I'm gonna post anyway... :D Not even 48 hours since Dixie and Ruckus have been home ...and I am completely blown away! Dixie is way calmer and much more confident. She even looks like she's smiling sometimes. She's romping in the snow off leash (ecollar on for our safety and peace of mind), she waits before coming inside or going outside. She places the first time every time. She kennels amazingly. She actually HARDLY EVER whines... and when she does she is easily corrected. Anyone who knows Dixie.... knows how she talks. Well, not anymore. She can walk by the truck without going ballistic thinking or rather DEMANDING we take her for a ride RIGHT NOW. Next test will be when the truck starts lol but hey, this is only day 1/2! Ruckus is like a bajillion times calmer... it's as if I sent them away for a week and got a Ruckus 2.0! He is happier, he is wayyy more confident, he is learning to make good decisions always and not to worry so much, he is learning ALOT about personal space (thats difficult for him, but he's doing great), he walks by my side and NEVER has gone ahead of me everytime we've walked (which was twice for a total of an hour and a bit), he comes when i call him. He checks in if i let him on the Long lead to sniff at or eat that delicious looking snowbank, he places the first time, every time...same with kennel time.. i could go on... but I'll save you the headache for now :P Hank didn't go to training but he's doing a complete 360 too. I trained him on the ecollar today. He stayed by ny side on walks with some corrections of course. But Hank had literally got a shit eating grin on his face almost all the time now if he's nit snoring away. He HATED the kennel at first and basically refused to get in, now kenneling up is a breeze! Place however.... well, that's a work in progress. Once he's on place he's good to go... but getting him on there... well, that's a story for another time. Roxy went back with Debbi to the Prairieburn K9 Academy to help her with some pretty big insecurites we honestly didn't even know she had. We got an update from Debbi today and things are moving along. We are excited for Roxy, she needs this and will come back to us in a much better and healthy state of mind. We can't wait to have her a part of this journey with us soon For the first time in MONTHS I've gone OUTSIDE for leisure... like 5 walks... plus training in the fence! I was in a dark messy hole... but for the first time in a long time, i feel alove again. Me and the dogs are gonna kill this. The dogs need me and I believe in us Thank you to everyone (you know who you are) for putting up with me and encouraging me through all of this. Thank you to Jordan for believing in me even when he thought this would NEVER work. But seeing is believing and we are in this together now. Most of all, thank you Debbi for going above and beyond and taking Roxy with you and also for teaching our dogs to know what it's like to be calm... to just be a dog. And in turn rehabilitating myself. The adventures await

Focus on progress, not perfection

Prairieburn K9 Academy 13.01.2022

Confident, self-assured, firm, decisive, and insistent... Or Hesitant, apprehensive, soft, timid, and doubtful...?... One of these personas will create the perfect storm of messy dog ownership, even with the cupcake, unicorn dogs that are still willing to take advantage of an overly permissive environment. I mean, only a fool would squander an opportunity for immediate payoff. This is the one non-transferable detail that most owners continue to struggle with... the mastery of assertiveness. No tools or training will help the owner that cannot sufficiently shift her believability. This is the toughest part of the entire equation... the change required in YOU. When it comes to truly transforming your ill behaved dog, you cannot assume that training will generalize to the overly accommodating. Dogs are masters at pinpointing who REALLY needs to be listened to, and who can still be ignored. Even the smallest allowances, missed corrections, or refusal, let go, gives all the ammo needed to make their conclusions. Just because a dog KNOWS a set of commands does not mean she will DO, for you. If your heart and mindset lack intentional fortitude, your dog will see right through your half-hearted attempts at credibility. This, by no means, should be misconstrued with yelling, being mean, or being angry. That mindset will work against you as well. A calm, patient, CERTAIN, emotionally mature, present, aware, don’t-mess-with-me mindset, however, will recreate the trainer’s ethos. If, or when, things start to go South again with your dog, this shift in mindset is typically the culprit.

Received a wonderful message from Rosa's owner today! Thank you! I remember going to the shelter and meeting a dog that was described as a very energetic dog who needed to work on not mouthing people. That dog’s big ears won me over VERY quickly, I adopted her. A few days after having Rosa at my home I started to realize that her energy would come out by means of chewing up my shoes, sneaking socks to swallow whole, and of course zooming around the living room. Also that s...he didn’t know how to play without using her mouth. I had lost numerous socks and had bruises and scratches on my arms in the following weeks because of the way she played. It was difficult to make phone calls or have anyone over because of her behaviour. I was becoming frustrated and overwhelmed. I did some research and listened to some recommendations and contacted Debbi. A few months after getting Rosa, I started training with Debbi and Hannah. Just after the first day I was able to walk Rosa instead of her walking me! After the training sessions Rosa and I worked on all the skills that Debbi and Hannah taught us. Things were looking up but I felt some pushback from Rosa and didn’t know what to do so I went back for a follow up session. Debbi and Hannah were able to show me the things I had forgotten. I also realized that Rosa needed a little extra help so I got the ecollar. It was night and day when we got back home. The skills Debbi and Hannah taught me made it possible for me to communicate with Rosa, what I needed from her and to teach her right from wrong. Now Rosa has learned how to be calm, be playful without using teeth and walk beside me instead of pull me. The experience at Prairieburn has been so rewarding and I can’t thank Debbi and Hannah enough!

This is the organization I belong to and with having many dog owners here that use the ecollar this is a great survey to collect true data for the International Association of Canine Professionals that I would encourage everyone to do. Thanks!

In order to change an unwanted behaviour we first need to understand what a behaviour is and what causes the behaviour. BEHAVIOURS ARE PATTERNS Behaviours are patterns on how your dog reacts when faced with a situation. If a behaviour pattern is repeated number times this pattern becomes a way of life for your dog. ... For example, if every time the doorbell rings and your dog barks they are creating a pattern of behaviour for that situation. Doorbell rings, dog barks Doorbell rings, dog barks Doorbell rings, dog barks You get the picture. CHANGE THE PATTERN, CHANGE THE BEHAVIOUR In order to change a behaviour we need to determine what is creating the dog to feel the need to react and create a new positive behaviour for a situation. Doorbell rings, dog is calm, patient, and quiet Doorbell rings, dog is calm, patient, and quiet Doorbell rings, dog is calm, patient, and quiet When the new positive behaviour is repeated numerous times, and the owner is consistent and follows through with their expectations it becomes a new pattern and way of life for your dog. How do you get there? Consistency follow through and repetition. Yes, for the majority of dogs it’s that easy. We are here to help. We offer In Person Private Training Programs as well as our new Online Training Courses. Learn more at www.prairieburn.ca

A healthy relationship with your dog (defaulting, respecting, and listening to you) is cultivated LONG BEFORE YOU EVER NEED it. If your dog suffers from reactiv...ity on leash, the battle begins BEFORE your dog has her full scale episode. It all starts with your dog’s overall state of mind rather than the individual bad moments that flare up from time to time. Realize that your dog is constantly loading if you do not diffuse the the escalation sequence before it becomes a full-blown meltdown. Pacing and running around the house while trying to leash her up, dragging you out of the front door, pulling you on the leash, and zig-zagging from side to side, all load like a pressure cooker. All it’s going to take is the sight of an oncoming dog or cat to make your dog explode into a fury of reactivity. If you try to see all of the little moments (PRIOR TO ever leaving the house) as connected, and address them BEFORE they have a chance to compound and become nasty... you may never see a full scale explosion in the 1st place! Address ALL over-arousal or excitement while leashing up. Your dog must wait patiently at the doorno whining or amped up shenanigans. Your dog isn’t allowed to pull you to an area to go potty. She has to wait for your release. Never use constant restraint with your dog. This will inevitably create more resistance and agitation. If your dog still seems to be struggling to focus on you, quick 180 turns in the opposite direction should suffice to regain her attention. Correct ANY and ALL small moments of distraction before they load and explode. Don’t warn or give a correction that annoys more than it actually stops the unwanted behavior. It must be valuable right off the bat. Do not wait to see if your dog is going to react. Her death stare, huffing, and raised hackles are sure to be signs that you are way too late in the correction game. Every moment counts. Maintaining a calm state of mind before and during your walk is how you win the battle of reactivity. A lack of rules, structure, and leadership inside your home will give you a dog that does not listen in critical moments, or respect your judgement to make big ticket decisions.

Crate training - it's not just for potty training... Many times dogs take short naps during the day or become overstimulated by noises in the house outside and don’t have the ability to truly sleep where they can shut their brains off a really relax. Have fun travelling with your dog. By creating this safe and comfortable place for your dog in a crate it allows you to easily travel on a plane stay in a hotel where the dog will feel less stressed in an unfamiliar place. ... It also helps when your dog is at the groomers or vet where they will often be put in a crate. For a dog that is crate trained this stressful experience is reduced by having the same positive den feeling where they feel safe. . Learn more at www.prairieburn.ca

We had a great group of dogs attending our Stay & Train program this week. These kiddos struggled with impulse control and now have great relationships with their owners full of calm and confidence. Jerry This happy, excited Standard Poodle was a fun guys to work with who learned when to use his energy and when to have self control! He now has a solid foundation to set him up for success! Stella This nervous Border Collie Mix lived in flight/flight if something made her ...nervous and struggled with new things like going into her crate and being patient at doorways. Through our training she learned to trust that her humans will be her advocate and protector and she now enjoys downtime resting in her cozy crate and has great manners at doorways. Bailey the Labradoodle is a very stimulated girl who can be pushy and not listen to her humans. Bailey learned how to relax, not carry the baggage of having to be the decision maker in the family and has connected with her owners on a deeper dog level full of trust and respect. These dogs impress us at how much they can overcome! Check it out! Nala- Mastiff Nala learned how to respect space and not use her weight to bulldoze and know people over anymore! She learned that patience, impulse control and respect go hand in hand. Zoey- Golden Retriever This bubbly girl learned to keep four on the floor and that jumping isn't something she needs to do anymore! No more mouthing her owners hands either! Now she’s a well mannered respectful girl. ... Kardi- Yellow Husky Mix (Jasmine’s sister) Kardi was a pushy girl that would control space and other dogs and people and as a result became dog reactive. She learned it's not her job to take on the stress of leading and she can trust her owners to do the job. Jasmine- Shephard Mix (Kardi's sister) Jasmine was following Kardi's lead and baecme dog reactive and insecure. Jasmine learned to trust her owners that they will advocate for her and she can just be a dog. See more

These kiddos overcame a lot of obstacles this past week. Walter the St Bernard, was people and dog reactive. Keiko who is the large collie mix, was dog reactive before training where he bit another dog. ... Cooper the cute little shepherd mix was nervous and scared of the world which caused him to be reactive. Rudy was an overstimulated dog who lacked impulse control causing struggles for his owners. Look at them now! Turning into the dogs we knew they could be. www.prairieburn.ca

It is about the relationship that you create with your dog where you earn their trust and respect to allow them to practice natural impulse control and a calm state of mind. Alot of relationship building happens before you ever go outside for a walk.

Check these special dog’s that attending our Stay & Train program! Look at the transformation in only 5 days! Max- German Shepherd This handsome man was a very distracted dog who struggled with listening to his owners! Now his recall is amazing! ... Elliot- German Shepherd mix We worked a lot with Elliot teaching him how to move to a calmer state of mind so that he could focus which in turn created trust and respect towards owners instead of carrying the stress of panic and reativity. Pepper- Medium Mix This girl came in as an insecure dog, who couldn’t trust her owners or the dogs she lived with creating reactivity and a few serious scuffles in the home. Now she is a great example to her 3 other dog siblings at home being someone they can look up to! Ruby- Small Mix Ruby was a very shy skiddish girl who practiced a lot of flight. Learning to trust humans allowed her work through her insecurities and come out of her shell to be a psychologically balanced dog who is gaining confidence! www.prairieburn.ca

Such a great article about horses that also applies to dogs! "Dogs seek the level of the person/people working with them" "This explains why a dog could be a complete angel for the trainer and then not work very well for the owner. It could also explain why the dog could do really well in training, and do well for a while after coming home, and then gradually unravel later and require a tune up.... Youre not working on the dog, youre working on yourself. https://greyhorsellc.wordpress.com///this-explains-a-lot/

Words from a great dog trainer Larry Krohn. "Whether you like it or not, if you have a dog you are training it. The question is are you training it for good or are you training it for bad. Training starts before training starts. How you live with your dog dictates how your dog lives with you. They learn from everything we do, good and bad. They miss nothing. They know us better than we know ourselves. They learn from everything we dont do. Obedience commands dont create a w...ell behaved dog. Raising a dog and teaching along the way does. No parent says they are going outside to train their kids. We just raise them and teach them 24 hours a day and try to provide guidance so eventually our children can make the right decisions on their own. Dogs are no different. Live right with them. They are not children. They are animals and must be respected as such. And they are a precious gift that are not here long enough so enjoy every minute and never take them for granted." See more
