Balance is something we all take for granted until we lose it and end up flat on our back somewhere.But the good news is that balance can be trained at an age or fitness level! Here are 3 exercises you can do to help train your balance: 1 Tightrope Walk... Lay a piece of string or a band on the floor (you can even use the lines of a tile or hardwood as a guide) and try and walk on the string without stepping off to the side. Walk at least 15 steps. 2 Flamingo Stance Stand on your left leg with your right leg lifted. You can use a chair or wall for support as you stretch your right leg forward. Hold for 15 seconds and then switch sides. You can increase the difficulty by reaching your hand to your raised foot. 3 Star Excursion Stand on your left leg with your right leg off the ground and reach your right leg out to the front. Then following a pattern of an 8 point star reach your right leg out to each point as far as you can go. Repetitive loading of the knee during running or some daily activities can cause pain right around your knee cap. If you’re experiencing pain when flexing your knee or at the tip of your knee cap you may need to take a break from running to initially reduce the pain. . BUT we want to avoid under-loading the tendon which could lead to it becoming less tolerant to loads in the future. If you’re experiencing a flare-up of pain then these exercises could help reduce it !... . 1 Banded Terminal Extension This exercise helps to activate your quadriceps in the final bit of knee extension. 2 Step Downs (Slow & Eccentric) This is important for building your tendon’s tolerance to compression & tension. Avoid using a large step because this may aggravate your knee more. Try for 3 seconds to lower and 3 seconds to straighten up 3 Tempo Box Squats This exercise also helps improve how much load your tendon can handle while limiting high compression loads. Box squats help prevent this because you aren’t squatting as deeply. Use the same tempo as the steps downs for help with motor control! Many of us spend our days looking down at our phones or computers which can lead to an achy, stiff neck. Here are some simple stretches to help you feel better! . Towel Neck Extension Roll up a towel and place it behind your head around your neck. Holding onto the ends of the towel pull gently forward while you look up to the ceiling. This is going to put your neck in the opposite position we spend most of our day and really open up the spine. .... Thumbs Up Rotation Sit up tall with your arms out to your sides and your thumbs pointing toward the floor. Turn your neck to the right and point your right thumb up to the ceiling. Then turn to the left and turn your left thumb up to the ceiling. Alternate sides to help stretch out the muscles at the base of your neck! . Upper Back Stretch Reach your right arm across your body and use your left forearm to block it. Lightly push your right arm forward while you resist with your left. To amp it up turn your head toward your right shoulder. You should feel this in between your shoulder blades. Hold for 10 seconds then switch sides. . As a rule of thumb, if you’re getting fewer than 7 hours of sleep a night then you are probably in chronic sleep deprivation! . Some signs of sleep deprivation are: . Behavioral difficulties... Daytime sleepiness Depression and/or anxiety Frequently getting sick Irritability Hyperactivity Headaches, jaw pain, earaches Performance decreases in school, at work, or during exercise . Sleep is incredibly important & a lack of it can have a negative effect on your brain & cognitive function! . So how do you fix your sleep deprivation? . Start by setting a bedtime for yourself so that you get at LEAST 7 hours of sleep. Slowly move your current bedtime by 15 minutes each night until you reach your ideal time. Sleep in on weekends if you can but try to not sleep 2 hours past your normal wake up time. . Avoiding caffeine, exercise, heavy meals, and electronics close to your bedtime can also help you get a better night’s sleep. . If you’ve ever had low back pain in your life then you’ll definitely benefit from incorporating these exercises into your routine! . Bird Dog Again on all-4’s with your spine in neutral kick one leg backwards while raising the opposite arm until they’re out straight. Avoid arching your spine & hold the position for 10 seconds. Then switch sides & repeat. .... Side Plank Lie on your side with your legs bent and upper body supported through your elbow. Place your free hand on your opposite shoulder. Raise your hips so that only your knee and arm support your bodyweight. Hold this position for 10 seconds before returning back down. Perform the same for each side. . McGill Crunch Laying on your back with one knee bent and the other out straight. Tuck your hands under your low back for support and stiffen your core to prevent movement in your lumbar spine. Bring the elbows up slightly, just enough so that they are off the ground while at the same time slightly lifting your head. When lifting your head focus on using a neutral neck and your shoulders to lift the head up. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat on the other side. . Start with a Warmup... Anyone who’s shovelled wet, heavy snow knows that you work up a sweat doing it. Treat snow shovelling like a workout and get your body moving beforehand. This will help prime your muscles and prevent injuries . Practice Good Form Keeping your knees slightly bent and hinging at the hips while you lift the snow will help prevent overstraining of your low back and shoulders. Try keeping the shovel close to your body, engaging your core and avoiding twisting to help make the lift easier and keep your spine safe! . Worker Smarter Not Harder Don’t fill the entire shovel with each scoop, moving smaller amounts of snow at a time may take longer but will take some strain off your back. OR just push the snow without lifting it at all! A big push shovel will help you avoid having to lift any snow. Take Breaks Working until you’re exhausted increases your risk of injury.
