During Covid-19, we all know that the front line healthcare staff is going above and beyond the call of duty. In our family, we are especially grateful for the staff at Trillium Ridge Retirement Centre in Kingston, where my 96-year old mother lives, for keeping their facility closed down and safe for residents or staff. To show our appreciation, yesterday, I put on a Parkhurst Canada face mask and delivered 20 of their 'Comfort Straps' that my husband and I obtained for eac...h of the staff and my brother and his wife contributed individually wrapped, delicious hand-made Belgium truffles from Cocoa Bistro for each of them to take home. Thank you Audrey Brown for your delicious creations! My mother, whom I've not seen for 8 weeks, peeked through the door, and when I left, said: "See you soon, and next time on the inside!" Often people who tend to communicate passively think that being assertive is close to bullying, but it is usually because assertiveness and aggressiveness are often confused. When you learn to use a 4-step assertive process, you can easily express what is important to you. It involves calmly stating what you feel, believe or think about a situation without any blame attached, and depending upon the situation, even asking for a buy-in from the other person.
