Hello everyone, How are you all doing with the social distancing? Thank you to all the health care people, everyone keeping us fed and well stocked and those stuck at home. We would be happy to see you and have a chat, just not right now. We respect that some of you need to get out of the house but unless your vehicle quits or your lights are flashing please defer your regular service or tire changeovers for a while. We are keeping our fleets going and will help you if ne...eded. Please call ahead and we can set something up. On another note, my kids are showing us old people that you can have multiple households on facetime at the same time, so I guess that is how we will get together at Easter! We'll all have to make the best of it. We sincerely appreciate your support -Thank you! See more

CT525 FAILURE #1 Last month we went to the scrap pile to salvage the crankshaft for CT525 failure #2 and analyze what caused this engine to fail at the Montana 200 in 2018. This is also a story about companies that don't give a s..t about taking care of their customers. It is a bit long but you need some background that this was not some slapstick effort. We started with a new crate engine ordered from SMP in Saskatoon. The technical manual and the complete front drive ki...t which includes water pump, power steering pump, alternator, belt, tensioner, idlers and all the mounting brackets and hardware were also ordered from SMP. Fluidyne's super late model oil cooler with fan was attached to a new radiator. A Peterson oil filter mount with built in primer pump was connected with all new Aeroquip lite hose and the best fittings. A complete Quartemaster Pro Series clutch, bellhousing assembly was bolted to the back. A Jones belt drive fuel pump assembly was chosen to supply the fuel. New headers, new ignition box, new harness, new, new, new, blah, blah, blah. Both failed CT525 engines never made one revolution without being primed with AMSOIL break in oil or Dominator racing oil. This engine had a dyno break in and tune supervised by professionals. Why then, with this much preparation did this engine run only 100-200 laps before failure? It never ran hot, one lap it was fine the next lap there was no water left in the engine. Initial inspection showed all the spark plugs intact and water coming out of cylinder #5. The engine would still turn over. Attached are some photos of what we found on teardown. The blue caps are tamper seals for racing series. The codes can be read by GM to show this is their workmanship. Most of the head bolts were measured at mostly less than 20 pounds of torque. A couple of outside head bolts on the failed left head and the centre bolts on the right head were around 60 pounds. The left head gasket was failed between #3 and #5- BIG SURPRISE!!! The thrust bearing on this P.O.S. was failed same as its cousin CT525 failure #2. The difference was #1 had .020 endplay, #2 had closer to .040. Conclusion, failure #1 expired after running 1/2 as many laps so did not have time to grind itself up as bad. Conclusion, someone forgot to tighten head bolts. GM and most of the companies involved were unwilling to assist with technical support/failure analysis or warranty. GM stated they do not evaluate race engines that have been run. Really?? Race engine-PLEASE This is a regular engine with production head bolts and regular cast crankshafts likely made from recycled tugboats and held in with more mushy bolts. Crate engines were introduced years ago to equalize competition and reduce costs. The first ones were mostly pretty good. This is NOT an inexpensive engine to set up, I give it less than one star. More stories and photos coming from CT525 failure #2. See more
