So scary to hear there is only 3 minutes to evacuate a house that would of once allowed you 14-17 minutes about 30 years ago. Article on burn time below: https://www.thisoldhouse.com//what-really-happens-in-a-hou Just a friendly reminder October is fire safety month so check those batteries in smoke/carbon monoxide detectors to ensure batteries are replaced (@ end of month to coincide with clock change is a good reminder) and remember to vacuum out your detectors monthly. This is now the #1 cause of nuisance alarms according to our BRK detector rep.

While #StayingHome, a lot of people are sprucing up their home with a fresh coat of paint. We turned to TV host and DIY expert, Chip Wade, for a few helpful tip...s to keep your DIY project safer: Its tempting to do but NEVER PAINT smoke alarms (or cover them with stickers or decorations). These can keep alarms from sensing smoke properly. While you already have the ladder out, visually check the color of your smoke alarms (every smoke alarm needs replacement after 10 years). If alarms are faded and yellow, it might be time to replace them. Forgot installation date? You can check the manufacturing date on the back of the alarm and add 10 years. DO NOT PAINT WINDOWS SHUT. In the event of an emergency, windows may need to be used to safely escape outside. Do not paint over electrical outlets this risks getting paint inside the slots or pushing paint into the outlet after it dries which can cause a fire. Always use painters tape to cover outlets and remember to turn off the rooms power prior to removing electrical outlet or switch covers. #firesafety #painting #DIY #interiorpainting #doityourself #homedecor #replacealarms #stayhome #shelter #diysafety

Its National Hug Your Dog Day! Experts say that pet fostering and adoptions are up 700% while were #stayinghome. Pets are family too, and are vulnerable to th...e same safety risks as their humans. #DYK 500,000 pets are injured by smoke inhalation and 40,000 die each year due to home fires? Here are some tips to help keep your 4-legged family safe: Home Alone - When leaving pets home alone, keep them in areas or rooms near entrances where firefighters can easily find them. Chewing Cords - Some pets are chewers (especially puppies!), so watch to make sure they dont chew through electrical cords! Escape Plan - Pets should always be considered in your familys evacuation plan, know their hiding spots! Keep Away - More than 1,000 home fires each year are started by our fur-ever friends. Keep curious pets away from stoves and countertops, and move items they can knock over. Window Clings - Consider a window cling for your front window that shows the number of pets in the home this helps first responders in case of emergency. Check Alarms Check your smoke and CO alarms to make sure theyre under 10 years of age. If theyre older than that, they need to be replaced. Now, stay safe and go hug your dog (or cat)! #firesafety #petsafety #withme #workfromhome #pets #rescuedog #tip #istayhomefor #escapeplan #dogmomlife #NationalHugYourDogDay

I still am totally dumb-founded when I see people throwing out cigarette butts on the ground, not only is a total lack of respect for peoples property, and for the environment, some have the audacity to think its a bright idea to throw out while driving in hopes of it blowing off the road and starting a fire in the grass on the shoulder of the road. If you enjoy the taste so much of a cigarette and savour the aroma keep it in your ash-tray in car! I wish the police would catch more people in the act and enforce the $5000 littering fine.

Make sure you know how to use a fire extinguisher in case you ever need to! Learn and remember the PASS acronym and remember to never by a retail disposable fire extinguisher if you want it to last! Buy once! Buy Right! Check & ensure the extinguisher you purchase has an aluminum head. Plastic ones may last the full 12 years posted on cylinder but many times I have customers hand me ones that have leaked off in the first year or two! thats why I only sell Strike First brand from right here in Ontario: http://www.strike-first.com/products/abc-dry-chemical/

Let me know if you or someone else you know needs a generator or Generlink adaptor for your meter base to help make operating a portable generator safer.
