Statement from Dr. Penny Sutcliffe, Medical Officer of Health with Public Health Sudbury & Districts on COVID-19 and stigma COVID-19 does not discriminate. Neither should our communities. Public Health is supporting individuals who have been dealing with mistreatment following their diagnosis of COVID-19. We cannot and will not tolerate any form of discrimination or stigma of people who are dealing with this virus. The truth is, we are all vulnerable. Our family members, frie...nds, neighbours, members of our close-knit communities, and strangers we don’t know are all susceptible to this virus. People with COVID-19 should be treated with kindness and compassion and should not be blamed. They will benefit from our support. We all have a role in practising kindness, patience, and gratitude toward others. We encourage others not to pursue or spread information about confirmed cases. Please, be kind, treat people well, and continue to support one another. See more

School looks a little different this year. For one thing, wearing a mask at school and on school buses is the new normal. When it comes to COVID-19 safety, masks need to be worn correctly. Your children may benefit from a refresher on proper mask etiquette at school. Watch as Simon, age 17, demonstrates how to properly put on, take off, and store masks at school. Simon’s video is appropriate for children and youth in Grades 4 and up. Public Health Sudbury & Districts would l...ike to thank Simon for his time and for helping to keep our school community safe. #COVIDsafe #FaceCoverings #PublicHealth #Sudbury #Manitoulin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEJeLEdpZSw&feature=emb_logo

Is the #COVID19 vaccine safe? Yes. Health Canada has completed all the required steps in the approval processes for the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines. The approved vaccines are safe and effective. All components of the routine approval process were addressed in an expedited way. The Pfizer vaccine is approved for use in people aged 16 and older, with some exceptions. The Moderna vaccine is approved for use in people 18 years of age or older, again with some exceptions.... As with all vaccines, the approved COVID-19 vaccines should not be given to anyone with an immediate or anaphylactic hypersensitivity (allergy) to any component of the vaccine or its packaging. Similarly, the vaccines are not for individuals with a history of anaphylaxis after a previous dose of the vaccine. Public health COVID-19 prevention measures must continue to be followedeven for people who have been immunized. Immunizing enough people to achieve widespread immunity will take some time. Patience and kindness and we will get through this! Public Health Sudbury & Districts is now in the OrangeRestrict level of the COVID-19 Response Framework. This is not a green light. This is not a return to normal and we must continue to proceed with caution. Even if there is no longer a stay-at-home order in place for Sudbury and districts, we must remember to take every precaution to protect ourselves and others. Everyone is still strongly advised to: Limit close contact to household members only. Stay home as much a...s possible. Avoid social gatherings. Maintain two metres distance from those outside your household. Avoid non-essential travel. Do not go out if you have symptoms of COVID-19 and get tested. Wash your hands and wear a face covering. We all have a role in supporting each other and the health of our communities. We do not want to undo the progress we have made. Stay home, stay safe. Mental health issues in our community are increasingly complex, especially during these trying times. One thing we can all do is listen and instill hope by working together. Each year, through the Circles Sudbury program, Circles participants and staff work together to identify one key issue or community barrier to focus on called the Big View. Mental health support and access to affordable housing were identified as key and connected issues to focus on for the Big View in 20...19 and 2020. Watch the snapshot video of the Fighting Stigma and Finding Support event co-hosted by Public Health Sudbury & District’s Circles initiative and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine’s Dean Speaker Series held on March 11, 2020. The event featured a talk by mental health advocate Amy Willans and an interactive art exhibit of the Photovoice project developed by Circles participants. COVID-19 masks at school tip #5 for parents. Make sure the mask is the right size to cover the nose, mouth, and chin. If the mask has pleats, ensure they are facing down. Children should be taught how to wear the mask properly for maximum protection. It is important that they do not touch the front of the mask and do not pull it under the chin or into their mouth. Remind children to wash their hands for 15 seconds immediately before putting on their mask. It is equally as... important to wash their hands before and after removing their mask. When washing hands is not an option, they should use alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Masks should be removed by the ear loops or ties and not by touching the front of the mask. Practising with your child when at home can help ensure that they feel confident and comfortable putting on and removing the mask on their own. Don’t forget to give lots of praise to children for their efforts to keep COVID-safe. For more information on masks, please visit: https://www.phsd.ca//guidance-for-wearing-non-medical-masks. Dr. Penny Sutcliffe, shares her thoughts on the fall season and COVID-19 including gathering for Thanksgiving. We are now seeing the second wave of pandemic activity in the province and there’s no reason to think that we are not going to start following those trends in the Northeast. The actions we need to take are relatively simple when we think about the cost of not doing them, the cost to our schools, the cost to our economy, and the cost to our health. As we go into the... fall and times of celebration like Thanksgiving it’s really important to assess risk and think about how we can do things in a COVID safe way. This is not just theoretical, we have had cases in our area that have been associated with indoor dinner parties. Public Health can’t do this alone, we absolutely have to do this together and we must rely on our collective decisions. #PublicHealth #Sudbury #Manitoulin #COVID19
